Steemit could Massively Profit from Social Media CensorshipsteemCreated with Sketch.

The censorship on other social media platforms is increasing, at a very rapid pace, especially following the 2016 US presidential elections, and with all this "fake news" agitations.

It looks like the Social Media websites are becoming censors of information and they will decide what kind of news you can have and what not. It's no longer about personal choice and listening to what you like, now it's about listening to what they decide for you, and what they think it's good for you.

It's just another form of totalitarian control, and the media is becoming like a governmental department. Truly a 1984 style Ministry of Truth.

  • Just type in "reddit ceo" in a reputable search engine like DuckDuckGo:

It's full of censorship exposing articles from various sources, their censorship seems endless.

  • Same for Facebook, just type in "facebook ceo censorship":

  • There are some for Twitter as well:

And why I say to use a reputable search engine line DuckDuckGo is because allegedly Google has been involved in censoring or blacklisting certain websites. But their algorithm of ranking sites is so complex that we may never know for sure, however just to make sure I would use DuckDuckGo instead. Not to mention the privacy benefits it brings.

So ladies and gentlemen, we see an increasing censorship worldwide, as if the media would act like a government, to shut down any free speech that is against their narrative.

Steemit is different, here we have a culture of free speech, and although the community can downvote certain questionable content, it is not centrally controlled, but controlled by the community.

We should all promote Steemit now more than ever, because this gives us a huge advantage. People always thirst for freedom of expression, and we can deliver this.

I cannot believe we still don't have free speech in 2016, but not for much longer. Let's make Steemit Great!

Bravo and Kudos to Steemit...I posted today about the free marketplace of ideas. I get kicked off Facebook about a week out of every month and have canceled my account with Twitter. I don't consider anything I post to be particularly controversial. Many dissatisfied Twitter users are going to Gab.ai which also doesn't censor. I didn't know about DuckDuck go so thanks! Upvoted

DuckDuckGo doesnt track your searches like Google, excellent for more online privacy.

Thanks...Just signed up!

I'm sure hoping Steemit sees a huge inflow of people from other platforms when/if people realize how much censorship is going on. This isn't really new, though. For years the major media corporations have been controlled by big business and big government interests. The internet just opened things up too fast for them to foresee what a big impact open world-wide communications would have on their ability to propagandize populations. Can't put the cat back in the bag now, though. Hopefully things like Steemit will continue to push back so people can still have some freedom of speech, some where.

Indeed, censorship is an ancient instrument used by authoritarians.

However they got exposed recently more than ever, and Steemit could benefit from this, if we promote it now hard. We could see millions of dissatisfied users joining us.

If steemit could somehow evolve a bit closer to facebook, maybe also incorporating something like ipfs for multimedia, it could really serve as a great censorship-free alternative for youtube+twitter+facebook+reddit.

Great! Shared in fb.

How do you figure that private people exercising editorial control over what they publish on their own website is censorship?

To me, that seems like free speech - the freedom to keep servers that you own from publishing things you don't want them to publish.

Am I wrong?

That would be true if there would be a free market for social media platforms, but there isnt, it's an oligopoly between: Facebook, Google (Youtube), Twitter & Reddit.

So pretty much these 4 corporations control the entire mass communication on the internet, and by censoring people they actually influence the public opinion a lot, which is a political risk.

If there would be like 1000 social media platforms and each one having millions of users, separately then your statement would be value, but since there are only 4, we demand free speech, since they control the entire market.

Several arguments can be made for free speech:

  • US First Amendment
  • Your content is your private property, therefore by deleting it, is a violation of your property rights.
  • It is unfair to invite people to post on your website, but then later on your change your mind and delete the ones you don't like.
  • Censoring people does cause financial harm, especially if a person built his career being an activist, and then his accounts get banned, a lot of work and investment goes in vain.
    *.....etc

You know both a corporation's private property and your private property is valid. We need to find a balance between to make both parties satisfied.

However a corporation in monopoly is no longer a corporation, it's a Government.

That would be true if there would be a free market for social media platforms, but there isnt, it's an oligopoly between: Facebook, Google (Youtube), Twitter & Reddit.

That's hogwash. Anyone can start a new one at any time and many do. Have you heard of Ello? Gnu Social? Diaspora? app.net? Steemit?

So pretty much these 4 corporations control the entire mass communication on the internet

They don't control anything other than their own websites. Users are free to use any site they wish, now as then.

Just because users actively prefer centralization doesn't mean that these companies are somehow in control of where the users point their eyeballs.

Resteemed and Upvoted. Excellent post! Thanks!
