Brazil - In the eyes of a Foreigner #1

in #steemit7 years ago

Hello fellow Steemians!

Nex here, writing with all my heart to you!

How's everything been going? I hope you guys and gals like our posts about mining and crypto but this time I'm going to do a different take on things.

You'll get to see Brazil, the way I see it

brazil_blog.jpg

First of all, here's some context - I've come to Brazil to experience first-hand some of my thesis proposals about workplace environment and management - and how those apply to corporations and business in general.

In one of our posts here, I covered Guanxi and Jeitinho Brasileiro which briefly explained my view on both of these aspects that influence work and daily life .

(You can read it here if you'd like https://steemit.com/steemit/@plainbroadcast/jeitinho-brasileiro-and-guanxi-are-going-to-be-extinct)

You see, not all that you see on television about Brazil is accurate, but honestly I believe most of it is.

The Favelas

There aren't favelas everywhere - although some parts of the city are highly dangerous.

So what is a Favela you might ask? A favela (Portuguese pronunciation: [faˈvɛlɐ]), is Portuguese for slum, is a low-income historically informal urban area in Brazil.

Bandidos100.jpg

If you enter a favela, do so at your own peril , because you might end up meeting some of these fellows, the Bandidos (literally bandits).

Aside from the favela and bandidos, which are part of the everyday life, Brazil is mostly peaceful if you do not step on any toes. - Which means avoiding fuss and playing along to what I like to call ¨the game¨.

The Game

This part is directly related to the aforementioned Jeitinho Brasileiro , and is by far the most interesting aspect that blows my thesis apart.

You see, there is sort of cheat code for life.

You can obtain documents easily - like visas, skip steps in the chain of command and even advance in your career - if you play your cards right.

You see, the Jeitinho Brasileiro works sort of like this cheat code that through your network of acquaintances you get to exchange favours, sometimes blackmail or coerce and get way with it - most of the times.

Here's example #1:

Suppose you wish to buy/rent a house.

Well you're going to need a lot of documents for this... You'll need your taxpayers ID, drivers license, visa - if you're a stranger - a bank account and the worst part - the dreaded guarantor - which is someone who will answer to the second party if you do not pay accordingly to contract!

Or you could simply trade favours or bribe everyone - or nearly - in the chain of command to avoid almost all of the documents required.

(Side Note: See how blockchain would fix this issue?)

This is just a short example, and while I maintain that this is my belief and I've experienced similar adventures, this may not be the case for everyone in Brazil .

Well this is going to be a very short post, since we're pretty enthralled in work, but next time I will develop further and show some of the nice things here as well!

Thanks for staying tuned and taking the time to read.

Lots of Love, Nex

btw, I am following You ;-)
