If Joined Steemit in July 17 then this post is for YOU!

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

If you joined Steemit in July 2017 then you celebrated your Steemit birthday with 54,545 other Steemains. What an awesome achievement to see you are still posting or still curating. Congratulations and welcome to the One Year Club.

It is commonly known that the retention rate on Steemit is rather low, so if your Steemit birthday was in July and you are reading this, let it be known that you have achieved a lot.  You are an early adaptor of an experimental platform and you deserve to be acknowledged.

To celebarte your 1 year Steemit Birthday I have some data to present to you.  Data that proves you are special

In July 2017 54,545 new accounts registered on Steemit.  Of this 22,858 have never made a post.  That means 58% or 31,678 accounts made post or comments on the platform.

Did you know that the % of new steemains that joined in June that made a post or comment was 55%.  In May 17 the that made a post or comment was lower at only was 48%,  April 17 that made a post or comment was lower at again at 46% and March was only 36%?

From this 31,687 accounts, a further 13,843 accounts stopped posting by day 20 and have not posted since and only 3222 accounts have posted in the last 45 days. If you are one of these 3222 accounts you make up only 5.9% of the 54545 users that registered on Steemit in July 2017.

These 54545 accounts own 3.18M SP between them.  They have received 9.08M SP in delegation and have given out 772K in delegation.  This leaves a controlling SP of 11.49M SP.  From the data above we can also see that the 31687 accounts that posted made over 4.45M posts earning a whopping 3.18 bn in author rewards and also 228.25M in curator rewards.

Taking the same dataset but now adding a filter to exclude any users that have not posted.  The 35,739 accounts that have posted own 88% of the SP owned by everyone that joined in July and they are in control of 97% of the controlling SP

There is however a different between the curation rewards earned on all accounts registered in July17 to the accounts with active authors.  This difference of 7.97M or 3% of curation reward earned by accounts registered in July 17 went to curators.

We spoke about retention, but just to let you visualised when the accounts were dropping off.  The chart below plots the number of days since last post against the no of days registered on Steemit.  The deeper the colour the more users.

We can see on the right of this chart high population of deep colours.  This represents the users that registered and either never posted or haven’t posted in 350+ days.  As we move to the left of the chart we can see the drop off slows down considerably at around 300 days, on the left there is a high concentration of accounts posting, which represents the 5.9% of accounts that have posted in the last 45 days.

So who are the movers and shakers that registered in July ‘17

First I filtering the data to show accounts that never posted.  This table was then sorted to show those owning the most SP.

Next I have filtered the data to show the users that have been active in the last 45 days. The table below shows this data sorted by SP owned

And the table below shows the same data but this time sorted the posting rewards earned (shown in vests)

While sorting through this data I found a number of accounts that registered in July 2017 but only made their first or second post in the last 45 days.  Welcome back dudes and dudesses.  Glad you have joined us.

Looking at all July 2017 accounts now and sorting by the number of posts and comments made.

Finally, I did some totting on data relating to inactive author accounts.

52.55K accounts set up in July 17 have an SP of 50 or less.  The total SP owned by these accounts is 80.03K.   Of this 22.73K accounts have never posted or commented. The total of SP owned by these accounts is 14K

Conclusion

The % author retention from July 17 is only 5.9%, however these accounts own 88% of the SP owned by all the accounts registered that month. In the last 45 days, we seen a return of 75 Steemains to the platform that were previously considered dead fish.  Although only a small value, it is nice to see this claw back.

How many of the accounts do you recognise?

There are a few familiar names such as (and not limited too) @Dtube @themarkymark,  @nicolemoker, @bescouted, @martin.mikes, @carlgnash @steemitri, @inquiringtimes, @felander, @yandot and @krazykrista to name just a few.    Hope you all enjoyed your Steemit Birthday!

I also see it’s the birthday of many bots too this month.

Did you know I am 50% of the Steemit Witness @Steemcommunity with @abh12345 being the second half?  If you have a vote to spare, then vote now and don’t let your voice go unheard.

Always appreciate your analyses. Thank you.

Hey @paulag - I love these posts! I can't wait until next month's post which will be my Steem birthday!

I'm a little confused about the posting and curation rewards. You say:

earning a whopping 3.18 bn in author rewards

What units is that in? I'm guessing it must be VESTS, is that right? Also you said 3.18 bn but in the graphic it shows 1.36 bn. Just wanted to check if that was a typo or if I'm misunderstanding something.

Thanks for these great analyses and keep it up!

Thanks for the awesome data and big shoutout to @carlgnash , I joined in August and have had maybe a few downtimes of like 2 weeks but still posting. Steem on !!!

Great and interesting analysis!!!
Only 5.9%?!! Oh that's not much :-(
... but, yeah I'm still here, with mixed feelings, but still having a lot of fun :-)

Your post was selected and voted by the curator @pataty69 project that can be followed on my trail at Steemauto.

Awesome analysis. Although the retention rate seems pretty low, the people who keep pushing and get trough the not so good times here on Steemit will have a lot to win in the next couple of years in my opinion.

hey @paulag, cool stats (as usual) and thanks for the special mention.

I did not even realise that it was my steemBD, thanks for metioning it.

Just keep up the good work here just like I know that the ones mentioned are not going anywhere either. in for the long run

Great analysis, thanks for the excellent content. I started now and I'm still a baby fish, but I'm sure I'll follow the example and I will have a long life here, a lot of success for you.

Some great info here wow congrats to all the peeps who lasted the full year and are still going. You guys clearly deserve all the rewards you're getting now for fighting the good fight! My goal was to try this out for a year and see how far i can make it, and like every steemain you sometimes feel like you should just give up but posts like these keep us going! Also, the bear market has definately had its effect on attracting people to steemit im sure

I can't wait for this post on December!! Please show me how special I have become :_D
