We have this amazing hamburger restaurant here in South Africa and they're called RocoMamas. It's a brilliant place and they have an amazing menu that is ever-evolving and changing to remain fresh and new.

They ran a special a year ago on a hamburger they call the "Bedford Bomb". The name derives from the area in which the particular restaurant is situated, and the fact that this burger is made with the hottest chili known to man. The chili is the Guinness World Record breaking Carolina Reaper, and infamous it is!

I'll admit, I wasn't brave enough to try it when it was available in 2017, but I often wondered if I should give it a try. The special ended, and like the saying goes, you only miss something when it's gone (or something like that).

My bravery grew, and I thought that I had missed out on trying this stupidly hot burger. And then, in 2018, they re-launched. Now I couldn't refuse. But I didn't get the outcome I expected...

What did I expect? I knew it would be hot, but would I take one bite and quit? Could it burn my lips, mouth or throat so bad that I need medicine to remedy it? Would it taste good in spite of the heat?

So I took some friends, and a GoPro, and ordered the beast. Here goes, right?

It was hot, VERY hot, and it burned all the way down, but I was able to finish it, without needing a beverage to quench the fire within, at least until afterwards. I'm glad I tried it, but I'll never have it again.

But I said it had the worst outcome ever, and it wasn't what I thought...

I didn't need heartburn remedies, and I don't think I gave myself stomach ulcers or internal bleeding. I didn't need to put a toilet roll in the freezer either, thank goodness.

But what it did do was sear my taste buds in such a way that coffee doesn't taste right. You heard me, coffee now tastes like it was made with sea water and a touch of fruit juice, with a slight aftertaste of actual coffee beans.

And I LOVE coffee. To say that coffee is my favourite drink is an understatement.

All I can do is hope that soon, very soon, coffee will again be the heavenly drink it always was to me.!
