Steeming for Polarity: Pakman's Ghost
Hello Steemians,
I want to thank @davidpakman for having an avatar contest exclusively here on Steem. Also, Thanks for upvoting my comment everyone for my participation on his contest page (https://goo.gl/eS644w). I really appreciate it. Please continue to support the Steemit community.
This was a fun project to work on. Something different and bold. Our Art assignment for the contest was to create an avatar for his page. I wanted to portray something that kept his image intact while playing with the blue hues of the Steem colors.
(Time to Complete: approximately 20-25 mins)
I felt it was also important to promote Steem and Steemit in both logo and text form. This was also a bit based on some things points I pulled from his article. It needed the logo for those who weren't familiar, I thought too.
It also would need the platform in text for people to be curious about. I initially wanted to do something along the lines of circuits or coins or something of politics subtly reflecting his channel some. I turned away from these ideas based on how much he wanted to help our growing community and leverage his own.
(duplicated layers as 'screens' to increase white values)
I went to the scheme that was more inviting, more captivating, and user friendly. It wasn't as flashy as gold and it wasn't polarizing. As I pondered about polarity I thought of David being polarized.....being pulled throughout Steemit.
(Colorized towards higher royal blues, duplicated, then colorized towards aquamarines and lowered opacity.)
This was a simple, yet moderately difficult task in that the fine line of balancing the blue hues wasn't so clear. They needed to be of the same palette, yet identifiable as objects and text. Not only did the blues needed to be acutely leveled, but so did the blacks and whites.
The final touch was the Steem logo and the community. I thought it looked nice going through the center of his eye, so I aligned as such. The Diagonal seemed elegant. Two layers were duplicated, turned to half opacity, and had separate modes. One was put on Addition mode while the on Grain Merge. This seemed to give a nice glow I was trying to go for.
I used the software Gimp as my tool of Photo-manipulation. I spent many years in Photoshop and decided to switch to Gimp a couple years ago. I highly recommend the open software to all levels of users. Not only is it a Free tool for you to learn and fund your passion.
Keep having fun and thanks for upvoting Steemians.
