Hack FAQ

Compromise? Hack? Theft??
Those are scary words when you're talking about a site where you have money invested.
Fortunately, it's not that bad. The admins are on top of things, and your steem is in safe hands.

First off, if you haven't read the important security announcement which is linked from a huge red bar at the top of the site right now, you should.

The key points to take away are:

  1. A very small number of accounts were compromised (<260, which is a tiny percentage of users on here)
  2. The total value stolen was under $85k, which is not a great deal in the overall scope of this site
  3. The steem currency itself was not compromised in any way, just user accounts
  4. Compromised users will be reimbursed
  5. The security holes which lead to this have now been closed.

We now return you to normalcy - or whatever passes for it around these parts ;)
Happy Steeming!

Edit: For some reason my markup link to the announcement doesn't seem to be working for some users. Here's the direct link in case you're having trouble with it: https://steemit.com/steemit/@steemitblog/important-security-announcement-steemit-ceo-ned-scott
