Idea: 10% bonus to voting power for those not in the powering down state.steemCreated with Sketch.

Hi Steemit,

I think this idea would probably be simple enough to implement:

If (account not powering down)
then (effective steem power + 10% with regards to post and witness voting)

Why? As usual we want the system to incentivize good behavior. I think most people would agree that keeping your SP locked up in large recognizable accounts subject to the reputation system is "good" behavior, and that dumping your Steem on the market and/or shifting power around to other accounts is "not as good" behavior.

Yea, I realize that delegated SP mucks with this a bit.

If you were in the middle of powering down and you canceled just to take advantage of this bonus, that's fine. Restarting the powerdown would reset your time.

I like the idea!

I think this could be helpful. It would help me, as I have never powered down, so far.

The economy here is not super complex but it's not simple either, so any action like this will likely cause unexpected outcomes, but I think it is worth a try. It can be further tweaked, or even rolled back, if we find more of a "not as good" result than we hoped for.

Interesting proposal. I agree with you the algorithms could include rewards for users not powering down. For posts with 50/50 as well as 100% SP. Larger incentives to the 100%. Maybe: x to 50/50 posts and 2x to 100 posts. I state x, since x to me is not necessary 10%. It could even have a higher value in my opinion. Or some kind of formula including the number of power downs and/or relative and/or absolute value of power downs; The more power downs and/or value done in the past, the lower x will be (maybe it is even allowed to become negative). This will not prevent the real power downers to stop, but will keep the people who did not power down in the past, in power up position and therefore connected with the community. The people already in power down status (or done in the past) do want to leave, or at least something is in their mind that they do not want to be around for long anymore, so let them leave, clear up the community and build Steemit with the people having only positive in mind when thinking of Steemit.

How would you determine who is powering down? Would it be daily? 7 day average? Just because an account is set to power down does not mean the account is actually powering down. They could be maintaining current steem power by powering back up what they power down. For example if an account wants to maintain say 50m vests it could power down, and immediately power back up to 50m vests every week only taking out what was earned in the previous week.

It would just be a binary thing. If the account is powering down, they would not get the 10% bonus. Even if they powered most of that right back up again, they still wouldn't get the bonus if their account is in the powerdown state.

Interesting! Great idea @neoxian... I think this would be a healthy incentive. Taking it a step further, what if your power "bonus" could slowly increase with time? So basically, the longer you've been powering up (and not powering down) the greater your "bonus" would accrue...?

Great idea. There is always talk of gamification which in some respects i am not a big fan of but i am hugely in favour of adding little bonuses or similar to those who don't power down. Gives added incentive!

I would be for this, I have never powered down and don't plan to until I retire to add to my retirement and that is a long time away, I'm only 22, or if it were to shoot up to like $100 per steem. wonder which will happen first.

@neoxian Useful idea, it would be nice to have some bonus.

Interesting idea. I don't have a strong opinion one way or another yet, but it's worth thinking about. I'm curious to see what others think.

Seems like a pretty smart idea!
