My approach is to auto-upvote my own blog posts (although I'd be happy not to if that was the general consensus).

I only upvote my comments if I'm making a point that I'd like to bump up the comments list.

But ultimately everyone is entitled to do what they feel. I'm sure if others in the community felt a person was abusing it, they'd downvote (or refuse to upvote) accordingly.
