For the most part, this is my process as well. I definitely upvote only after I read or if I already know that I love the author and am about to read it.
If it's a slow day at work I might read everything on my own feed + check out new posts. I really like the new section. Then I'll only upvote and/or comment according to how well something is written + topic + whether I can add to the discussion.
