From One Minnow to Another
Steemit is vast like the ocean, and minnows need help navigating it, even if that help comes from other minnows. We all have something to contribute.
While my profile shows I joined Steemit in August 2017, I really only started posting and interacting here about one month ago. I have to tell you that this month has gone by very fast, and while I’ve learned tons, I feel that my education about the Steemit platform, and my interactions with others here has only just begun. True to my handle here I feel very much the “infant” when it comes to Steemit knowledge.
That said, I have learned some useful things, and since I just got one of my offline friends to join (his girlfriend joined as well – hit them up at @oddsoul and @natah) I thought I might take the time to write a post that can give some helpful tips for the very newest of new minnows.
There’s nothing groundbreaking here, but rather than letting my friends stumble upon some resources themselves I thought I would point them in the right direction to help them get off to a good start.
So, what are some of the first things a new minnow might want to do on Steemit?
1. Join the Minnow Support Project
The Minnow Support Project (MSP) is a Witness initiative that is designed to help new Steemit members grow through a combination of promotion bots and community building on their Peace, Abundance, and Liberty Discord server (PALnet). MSP has more than 3,000 members, making it the largest off chain social network in the Steemit community. You’ll frequently find hundreds of people logged into the PALnet Discord server, and by utilizing the $upvote bot you can get a small amount of SBD on two posts a day, along with a jumpstart of votes.

2. Join Qurator
The Qurator project was created to help gain exposure for new Steemit members who might otherwise have difficulty finding an audience. Begun just 4 months ago it has rapidly grown and now has nearly 700 members. There is a cost to join of 2 SBD/STEEM, but that gets you lifetime voting from the @qurator account. That’s not inconsequential. If you do nothing else you are considered tier 0 and can get a ~$0.16 upvote once every 24 hours. But, but simply upvoting the @quarator posts once a day (7x/week) you advance to tier 2 and you can then get an upvote worth ~$1.21 once every 24 hours. Higher tiers with larger votes are also available, and you can learn all about the tiers here

3. Try to write and post daily
If you don’t post daily you won’t have anything new to be upvoted, you won’t be able to utilize the MSP and Qurator groups, and most importantly you’ll have trouble building a following. Posting daily can be strenuous in the beginning, but if you find a way to work it into your schedule I think you’ll find it’s actually quite easy.
4. Reply to any comments your posts receive
Someone took the time to respond to your post, I think it’s only polite to respond to them in turn. Honestly I’m always flattered that someone took the time to comment on my post and am happy to respond to them, as well as upvoting the comment if I feel it’s well thought out and relevant.
5. Take the time every day to comment on others posts
I can’t stress enough how much this will improve the speed at which you progress on Steemit. By commenting on other posts you get yourself out there in the community so others can get to know you a little. You’ll sometimes get upvotes from the original poster, and they may decide to follow you. You can also get upvotes on your comments from others, and they too will click through to your blog and occasionally follow you. In the beginning this can be the quickest way to make some SBD and gain a following. If you have the time you should try to comment on at least 10 posts a day. You certainly will want to comment on posts from those you’re following, but it’s also a good idea to dig through the new posts section to find new Steemians to follow. You can sometimes find real gems this way that would otherwise be buried.
6. Join a variety of Discord groups
This is one area I need to work on myself, but one of the best ways to get acquainted with your fellow Steemians is through the Discord chat channels.
