Always Check for Watermarks!

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

Browsing memes is something most of us have done, unless that's just something I tell myself to make me feel better for wasting my life. Regardless, I am sure at least someone here has taken their time to explore the danker side of the internet. Now there are a few things that might grind the gears of those who do look at memes;

  1. Someone posting something that isn't a meme, like drawings, fanfics, fanart, selfies, anime, porn, anime again, etc, on meme pages/apps.

  2. Obvious no-effort memes

  3. Shitposting

  4. ANIME AGAIN

  5. The FUCKING 🅱 EMOJI

Okay sorry I kinda lost it there. But I am sure these things and more may get on your nerves while you are just trying to get a good laugh.

But there is one thing that I think puts all of these to shame in how utterly insufferable it is. Something so vile, so evil, that it has to be called out for RIGHT. NOW. And that is...

Watermarks that show it wasn't OC (original content) by the poster, and the OP (original poster) is someone else. AKA, marks that indicate the person posting the meme did not make it, showing who it was actually made by.

Here are some examples from Steemit itself:

Now I won't be showing the profiles of the poster for the sake of respect. But trust me, the profile name and the watermarks aren't the same.

Now there are two things that make this situation WORSE!

  1. These people don't even put in the effort to crop it out!
  2. All of these were on the front page of the new section of the meme tag at the time I was looking... yeah. Half the posts still had watermarks on them.

Now one thing that came to my attention recently is @berniesanders recent post about how dmania is bad because of this reason. Now while I agree that this is a problem in dmania, its really a problem here as well, as shown by what I have seen today. So, I am not going to either agree or disagree with his argument. Yeah, this is probably the first time I ever had a neutral stance on something.

Now as I said before in my earlier posts, I avoid this problem myself, and it isn't a hassle at all. Most of my memes are made by me either on my free time, or in my SJW class, cause I really don't need to be listening to that shit. If not, I ask the poster of the meme if I can remove the watermark, post it here, and give him credit in any other way if he wants it. The saddest thing about that is that the person is utterly surprised that I asked, always saying something on the lines of "Haha, WOW. This is the first time someone asked permission to use something from me. I just thought it was accepted that someone would eventually steel it. But yeah go on right ahead". The thing is they are right, it is "normal" for memes to be taken and other people to take credit for them, regardless of time and effort put into them.

So if you are to take anything from this, please let it be these things.

  1. Be creative and make your own memes! Besides, it always feels better to get rewarded from something you made.
  2. If you want to post a meme not made by you, at least try to ask for permission.
  3. Whether or not you got permission, REMOVE THE WATERMARK. If you didn't get permission, then I hope you are so ashamed you get an extra chromosome.
  4. I FUCKING HATE ANIME AND THE 🅱 EMOJI

Anyway I will just end my post here. If you liked what you see, like and subscribe. If not, don't, but you will be missing out on a lot of great content, cause I don't just spam random memes, I write full on articles regarding memes. Here's a generic picture link to my channel:

Yup! Dude B right!

Theft is theft is theft...unless...uhm...It's plagiarism...which is...uhm...THEFT!!!

Taking credit for someone elses time and effort is (as you would say, my friend) DANK.

It devalues the community we have here and IMO goes against the principles of a decentralised platform. At the very least it shows that those who say that this is one of the problems with a decentralised platform...Are right.

Glad to see you are active, creating and wholesomely promoting your work.

Enjoy your SJW class buddy, BTW, be sure to leave your preferred pronoun in the comments man :)
