Is Chemical based storage the future of Crypto-Currency & Steem?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Researchers have created a crazy new technology: chlorine atom based digital storage. Basically the researchers at Delft University are using a scanning tunneling microscope and chlorine on a copper surface to store data. Each atom represents a 0 or 1 depending on its position, thus storing bits and bites. This technology is far from being ready for main stream use. The biggest working model only holds a kb of information and has a super slow i/o. However, chemical based storage is the wave of the future. Here’s a link to one of the articles about this if you want more detail:

The steem blockchain is about 1.38 GB right now and growing. I know the developers have designed an outside limit to make sure it doesn’t become unmanageable in size. However, as Moore’s Law continues to hold true, causing crypto currency to become more complex so that it remains a rare resource, we will end up with enormous data storage requirements. If everyone had a quantum computer at home, our current crypto currencies would probably be worth nothing. For that matter what happens if someone proves P truly is equal to NP. I personally don’t believe it is, and I think most mathematicians and computer Scientists would agree.

But people used to think the world was flat. I believe that in five years the next blockchain will be measured in terabytes, maybe sooner.

The Current Problem

I just started mining steem and ran into a problem with the CLI Tools for Microsoft Windows: “You will need to have 64bit Microsoft Windows7 and above, at least 4GB RAM and 500GB disk space. And a good Internet connection.” According to @bitcube on:

All my drives are 500GB SSDs, I am stuck, and I haven’t had much luck with the steem-0.12.2 miner. Over the past two years the average hard drive has actually gotten smaller since SSDs are so expensive per GB.

The Future Problem

For Crypto currency mining to remain viable, computer storage must grow at an equivalent or greater rate than computing power. What will the next iteration of crypto currency mining look like?

Please post comments; I would love to hear how others think chemical based storage will affect the future of crypto currency and steem.

Very interesting perspective, thanks!

Hi! This post has a Flesch-Kincaid grade level of 10.1 and reading ease of 57%. This puts the writing level on par with Michael Crichton and Mitt Romney.
