Cosmetic products, gadgets, airline tickets, food, clothes, shoes - running out of things to sell?
How about donating your blood and get paid for it?
Last Monday (November 13, 2017), we held the Blood Letting activity in support to the Department of Health's National Voluntary Blood Services Program. We are hosting this activity once or twice a year with a hope that we will be able to collect a lot of blood donations to be utilized by patients who will be needing it in one of the Government Hospitals here in Leyte.
It has been the tradition of the facility to tap other agencies and the barangay officials to support the said activity. Each barangay is requested to have atleast 2 donors. Our town is composed of 77 barangays thus if we will be able to get a 100% participation from them, then we would be expecting atleast 154 bags of blood per blood letting activity.
154 bags of blood could save 154 patients or more. Donating blood is such a heroic deed. It would give a dying mother who just had complication from her delivery, the chance to see her baby grow. You will be able to help someone survive her surgery, and come out from the Operating Room alive. Your blood can extend few more months to a patient who is sick, so he or she gets to spend more time with her family. You can help a child from losing her father. You will be capable of helping a couple to save their precious baby. You get to extend a dying person's life. You can save someone from a confirmed trip to the other side. See? Your 500cc of blood can make a lot of difference.
It is supremely noble to donate blood.
However, the nobility of volunteerism in blood letting activity in our locality needs questioning. There has been feedbacks that these donors are asking payments from the barangay officials. (Business minded eh?)
There are some barangays who weren't able to participate in the activity since they don't have funds to pay for the donors. If this kind of “money making” activities continue, the Department of Health should perhaps revise the name of the program.
I am not against with donors receiving incentives as an appreciation for their good deed. But those people who takes advantage and demands payment for their blood - 😒.
I salute those people who have been participating voluntarily in this activity without demanding anything and their only goal is to be of service to others. You may not get payment from this, but you will be rewarded in a different way.
