Why are there so many bots on Steemit?

For any Steemian that has been on Steemit for sometime now, they have seen bots of all sorts. Bots that automatically resteem your post, look through Steemit for plagiarism, give out upvotes, looks for short url generated links, etc. I don't know about you guys, but it kind of takes away from the experience for me.

For a lot of people, I'm sure they love these bots. Especially the resteem and upvote bots since they help one's own account grow faster than if one were to grow their account organically. For me personally, it's a pay to win system. For those that know about the bots and are able to have extra Steem to fund the bot, they can see their account flourish.

After a while, I have gotten used to it. Seeing upvote and resteem bots on every other posts has become a common thing to see. There is a plagiarism bot that checks posts to make sure they're are original and not pulled from another blog or media source in order to make money. But is it really necesary for all of these bots?

I believe they should be limited. As I said before, it takes away from the Steemit experience. If someone makes an account on Steemit and they put out bad content, do they really deserve to get upvotes and make money from their posts? A resteem/upvote bot doesn't care what kind of content is produced. It does what it was programmed to do. Only the Steemit community can decide if content is worth upvotes and resteems. I do think bots are good, but not for everything.

What about you?

What is your opinion on Steemit bots? Are they good or bad?

Best Wishes!

I completely agree. I lost a bunch of rep on my second day on here because I posted my affiliate link on one of my YouTube videos. I honestly didn’t know it was against the rules. So instead of them privately messaging me to warn me they tore my posts down and took my rep. I know it’s a new platform but I feel like there needs to be some major changes for it to keep growing.

Agreed. I wrote this post exactly because of beerbot that made a comment on this post. Lol. Kind of ironic that it makes an appearance again. I used a link in my end signature because I see Steemit as a good marketing tool to drive traffic to my website. I used a shorthand link because I want to see how many clicks I receive. These bots can be useful, but they get annoying really quickly.

Hello & Cheers!! I'm a content detection and information bot. You are receiving this reply because a short link or links have been detected in your post/comment. The purpose of this message is to inform your readers and yourself about the use of and dangers of short links.

To the readers of the post: Short links are provided by url shortening services. The short links they provide can be useful in some cases. Generally their use is benign. But as with all useful tools there are dangers. Short links can be used to hide all sorts of things. Quite frequently they are used to hide referral links for instance. While not dangerous this can be deceptive. They can also be used to hide dangerous links such as links to phishing sites, sites loaded with malware, scam sites, etc. You should always be extremely cautious before clicking on one. If you don't know and trust the poster don't click. Even if you do you should still be cautious and wary of any site you are sent to. It's always better to visit the site directly and not through a short link.

To the author of the post: While short links may be useful on some sites they are not needed on steemit. You can use markdown to format your links such as this link to steemit. It's as simple as [steemit](https://steemit.com) Unlike short links this allows the reader to see where they are going by simply hovering over the link before they click on it.

This message was created by a bot. It is part of the ongoing fight against spam and phishing attacks on steemit. If you did not use short links in your post and feel you have received this message in error you can contact @fubar-bdhr on discord or @fubar.bdhr on steemit chat to report the issue.

steemit was about ORIGINAL WORKS....no short cuts.... bots is an artificial way of getting the feeling that you are doing fine at steemit... let the truth prevail... let the truly INSPIRED audiance UPVOTE...

Right?! The best creative and original content should be the prosperous ones. Not the ones that are able to pay for artificial growth.

I agree. The only good bot is a dead bot. Power to the People! Here's an upvote and a follow. Thanks!

Thank you! I greatly appreciate it :)

I say ban them all, I am fed up of seeing advertising spam, like send 1 sbd and I will do blah blah blah

I am a human disguised as a bot.....You can actually create your own upvote bot using FOSSbot Voter. You don't need to pay any money to do this. It's free

That's pretty cool. I'm going to google it. Thanks for letting me know!

you are welcome. Actually Stella wrote a tutorial to help newbies with setting up their own Fossbot voter: https://steemit.com/bot/@stellabelle/create-a-free-open-source-voting-bot-with-fossbot
