@maninayton - Why I Have Reduced The Number Of People I Follow

in #steemit7 years ago

Following the last hard-fork a few weeks ago and having listened to some comments from @mindhunter, I decided to follow a new strategy and cut down on the number of people I follow.

I reduced the number down from 574 to 35.

There were a number of reasons why I took this decision.

I Have Matured More As A Steemian - When I first started on Steemit I followed almost everyone who either commented on one of my posts or did a post I found interesting. One symptom of this was indulging in the 'you follow me and I'll follow you' mentality in a bid to increase my tally of Followers and Following.

I suppose I was like a child let loose in a sweet shop - running around trying to grab as many of the goodies on offer as quickly as I could.

I soon came to realise I was sacrificing quality for quantity.

My Feed Was Becoming Very Cluttered - My feed became full of posts and resteems that didn't interest me. I found I was missing out on posts I wanted to see from like minded Steemians.

I Wanted To Better Target My Votes - Now that our number of votes are limited I wanted to be able to reward those posts I enjoyed the most.

It Is More Practical - With the limited time I have to spend on Steemit I was unable to read all the posts in my feed and engage with the posters. I thus felt I was not doing proper justice to those Steemians who had taken time and effort to produce good posts. Much better to have a smaller number and be able to pay more attention to them and contribute in more comments.

The Results

Due to circumstances, I have been unable to devote much time to Steemit over the past couple of weeks but I have still noticed a difference.

I now find that my feed has become much more manageable and I am able to read posts that are more relevant to my interests.

This has helped fulfil my aim of being able to target votes better.

I will definitely be able to engage more with fellow Steemians over the coming weeks and have a more rewarding experience on Steemit.

I Will Be More Discerning In The Future

As time goes on I will probably tweak my number of Follows further by periodically reviewing to see which are still active and posting. I will also visit other tabs and pick up new Follows to keep my feed fresh with new ideas and styles.

Conculsions

This has been a worthwhile and refreshing exercise. I have renewed my enthusiasm for Steemit and hopefully become a better contributor in the process.

I did that after my first month in. My feed became unmanageable because I was following too many people. I curate (remove) my feed when some people I follow/support become too spammy as well. I understand that some Steemit really does make a drastic financial impacts on some people even at a small scale so I do try to curate only the hardcore spammers.

I'm trying to grow my Steemit following slow and steady and I'm okay with not being lvl 50, 60, or 70+ in a few months. Keeps me sane as well. What I am noticing is my follower count is BALLOONING but my upvotes have pretty much stayed the same. Are there bots that just follow people?

It's a bit hard to gauge my true follower count (maybe it is real but I doubt it), when I have 1.4k followers and get on average 10-12 upvotes. It would be nice to be able to find out what my true follower count that actually engage with the community and my content would be.

Hi, @aagent and thank you for the comment. A good tool I use to see which of my followers are active is deadfollowers. Just type in your username and it will show your followers and which haven't posted in a while. Another good one for keeping a general eye on your account is steemstats.

The reputation score I find very frustrating. For me, it seems to be forever stuck on 57. Never mind, if we keep posting and commenting, sometime in the far distant future we may be on the earnings that the whales achieve!!

I too am conscious of the earnings potential of Steemit for some people and do try to upvote those intro posts that make an effort - although this has been somewhat curtailed due to the voting restriction.

Thanks once again for the comment. Stay well.

This is why I never did that since day 1, I only follow 140 people compared to 700 following me . It's easier and you focus on content you like not all rubish added as well

Thanks for the comment @journeyoflife. Yes, I wish I had followed that principle when I first started. Hay-ho, we live and learn.

That's good i only try to limit it to the people whom content i read and love the most.

Hi @blazing and thank you for the comment. Yes, that is now the strategy I'll be following. Makes the feed so much easier to read.
