The number next to your name

When you enter Steemit for the first time, after registering, you notice that there is a number next to your username on your blog page, as well as next to each comment and preview of your posts. This is your Reputation Score on Steemit. Today i will explain what that score is, what it means both technically and socially, and why it is an important characteristic in the Steemit ecosystem.

The basic

The reputation score is an indicator of your position in the Steemit community. This score is affected by a number of factors, but before exploring any calculations, here are the basic facts and ideas you should know to understand it -

-Every new account starts with a reputation score of (25)

-Your score increases with the number of upvotes and the proportional strength of those upvotes.

-Your score decreases with downvotes

-Each successive increase in the score number (ex from 50 to 51) is more difficult to achieve than the previous one.

As your posts and comments earn upvotes, your reputation score will increase. If you post something that others perceive as "bad" for whatever reason your score will drop. The reputation score is just one metric of how your presence, history, and contribution to Steemit are valued.

What Your Reputation Means

Your reputation score can be an indicator of many things, including how long a user has been on the platform, how valued their content is by the entire Steemit community, and how much their account has been penalized for negative flags / votes. To make it more fun and clear, we made this visual representation that generalizes the accounts based on their reputation scores.

What the Score DOES NOT Mean

The reputation score can tell you a number of things about your account, but it doesn't always show the whole story. Here are some points about what the reputation score does not indicate-

Reputation does not directly correlate with your voting power or the amount of STEEM / SBD you have in your wallet. Many investors own STEEM in other ancillary accounts and use them to vote. Since those accounts don't post or comment, they typically hold a reputation of 25.

Higher reputations do not equal "higher quality" or "better" content. It is not a measure to compare two accounts, only a number to indicate the amount of rewards and upvotes an account has received.
