Subliteracy and its effects on rewards?

Why?

My double major was in computer science and technical communications. That makes me one of the few who can write both code and documentation.

Language is Code

All language consists of code, instructions to the listener. Programming, if you will (MK ULTRA et al, as well as TV). If language is code, then, what happens when you get the coding wrong?

Specificity vs. Ambiguity

I find it incredibly important to be specific. When writing about a topic, which has acronyms or jargon, it's important to define the terms prior to using them, to reduce confusion in the reader. Even defining the term one sentence later can cause some confusion, which we want to avoid.

When discussing different actors, especially of the same gender, it's important to distinguish them -- rather than something like "Joan said Jane needs to catch up; she cried" -- who cried? Was it Joan, or was it Jane? That is ambiguous; better would be to end with "Joan cried" (or Jane, as the case may be).

Review Prior to Posting/Sending/etc.

I tend to re-read what I've written before I send it (if an email) or post it, etc. My process is, I will re-read and make corrections. If I've made even one correction, then I'll re-read it again. Only after I've completed a correction-free pass, will I post it.

This makes my communications take significantly longer than others. Around 2x to 4x as long. But I ensure that I'm not making logical errors via typos; i.e., leaving out the word "not" completely changes the meaning.

And, I consider my output to be input to someone else. Would I want faulty input? Absolutely not -- although, I konw taht trhee eistxs the alibity to fnid mnenaig wehn olny the frsit and lsat ltertes are psrenet. Still, I'd rather not have to do that extra cognitive effort.

Readbility

Writing clear prose that is easy to read is not simple. Blaise Pascal is credited as being the original author of this quote, which Mark Twain and others have also expressed: "I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time."

Although this sounds funny on the face of it -- how could you make something larger, with less time? -- it makes sense when considered fully. The editing process is time-consuming. While editing, one tends to remove a large portion of redundant material, so that the information presented is clear and concise.

Of course there also needs to be some repetition, to solidify certain key points, such as being specific and avoiding ambiguity.

And since my background also includes "speaker to computers" I know that they cannot afford any ambiguity in their instructions; code must be crystal clear to avoid bugs. So, I tend to consider my communication to other humans in the same regard -- especially when broadcasting to a wider audience.

If my audience includes 100 people, and it takes 5 minutes to read what I wrote, then that's 500 minutes of other people's time being spent as a result of my writing. So, I want to ensure that they get the full meaning that I intended, and do not see something I did not intend (e.g., a typo).

Rewards?

Does subliteracy affect rewards? I don't have a great answer to this. I've seen some posts which butcher the English language, but have made hundreds or more. I've also seen some posts which have been ignored, due to poor formatting or content.

Conclusion

I strive to be as literate as I can be. This takes time and effort. Have you noticed a correlation between literacy level and reward level? In your posts, or in others'? Thanks for taking the time to read!
