OK Steemit Inc GUI Developer.. Stop F*cking Around With Our Post Width Please!

in #steemit9 years ago (edited)

What is this shit? I go and posted my last post about the STEEM.GLOBAL tweaks and source code being open sourced and I go and submit the damn thing and it looks like absolute hore shit.. WHat is the point of having a preview if the final product is slimmed down 15% and doesn't display like the preview would lead us to believe it looks.

Good job on the menu icons and I'm excited to see progress but making the content area skinnier is shooting ourselves in the foot. Please heavily reconsider putting the post display area back to how it was so it atleast matched the preview and I don't nearly crap myself when my post reloads and looks like squished monkey testicles.

@ned you mind bringing up this to your boys? I'm not sure who to offer help to for Steemit GUI stuff. We need more content area not less! Have a good day all!

Hi @klye - I opened a GitHub issue. Do you have more issues about what needs to be corrected? What were the differences between the preview mode and the actual post?

https://github.com/steemit/condenser/issues/1378

Well we seem to be a good 10% skinnier in the posts then on the previews..

Maybe I should actually start taking interest in the Steemit github rather than circle jerking my own projects furiously as I have been.. It's built on react.js is it not?

Thanks. I updated the GitHub issue with the details you reported.

Yeah, you should totally get involved in some pull requests! I'd start out small just to get familiar with the code base. One thing to keep in mind is there is no guarantee that the PR will be accepted. I've done a few that didn't end up making it onto the live site. They've all been good learning experiences though, so it hasn't bothered me.

[Edit] Yes, it is built on react.js.

THanks for the info Sir Tim!

I'll maybe have a look see at it.

How goes the whitepaper thingy? Slipped my mind there but I remembered yesterday. What sections still need touched on?

Welcome. If you plan to work on it, you should check out this guide. I haven't updated it in a few months, but I believe it still works. If not, it should at least be pretty close. https://steemit.com/steemit/@timcliff/instructions-for-installing-a-steemit-com-instance-for-developers-interested-in-working-on-changes-to-steemit-com

WP is going good. Will provide details over steemit.chat.

I've got to get Steem-roller done before I start destroying and rebuilding Steemit how I imagine it should look... But eventually I will have a crack at it.

Thanks for the info and the link Tim!

Oh @klye, it's so nice to have you back!
(I'm envisioning squished monkey testicles as I type. LMFAO! and am so glad that your brain is firing at your full wit.)

:D Hey there lovely. Thanks for the kind words and mental image of squashed monkey testicles.. lol

Hahaha! Anytime my friend. Anytime.

I felt similar last nite. I don't understand why some changes are done on things that work fine - never have. Never will.

You do not have to make changes all the time, or just for the sake of it or so you can say

something was done

Have a good weekend

lol. As a designer / coder myself I often wonder how fucking stoned some people are when they create their visions and implement them..

Making a screen / reading area smaller isn't conducive to success... We need MOAR GIRTH!

Have a good weekend man.

lmao

Flagged because "lmao" isn't worth 4 cents. I'm glad you got a laugh out of my thoughts but voting yourself up on a one worder is horse shit. Please avoid this sorta thing in the future. :)

P.S. I love you

I upvoted my comment to 4 cents because its the minimum for my post to be visible.
berniesanders ruined my rep because he didn't like what I said.
Gotta love this community :-)

Agreed! I'll just calmly point out some of us who actually write, format our articles and choose certain wording so it fits on one line, centered. If I wanted the last two words of a sentence to appear below the one liner sentence, I would have made it look stupid like that intentionally in the first place.

Bahahaha. Well put.

Yep. I will often use different words than I initially thought up to ensure that it fills up the width of the page... NOPE. Preview is wank and the screen is 1/3rd wasted white space.. Cmon Steemit Inc! Even I can design a GUI better than the slimmed down version we got going on today.. And I am basically a smack off of slime mold intelligence wise most days!

It's not just that! Nearly everything I wrote previous to this hiccup looks like it was formatted by a FREEKIN' amateur!

Damn it feels good to yell!

Let the feels flow bro!

I was peturbed my last post regarding STEEM.GLOBAL ended up looking like horse shit.. Didn't even bother trying to reformat it.. They need to do some CSS tweaking on the server side.. lol

AHHHHHHH!!!

(I'm just kidding, but damn! Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn!)

I'm probably just an Olde Phossilized Pharte but wasn't there something called usability testing, once upon a time? At least I know I used to work in a usability lab for one of the major OEMs... and whatever was done had to look good on every conceivable browser, fed through every conceivable screen resolution... and if it didn't look right, it didn't ship.

Testing?! Usability!?

What witchcraft is this? Everyone knows the cool kids don't even bother to debug these days. :D

My bad.... as I said, I'm OLD.... :D

I hear there is a glue factory down the street that takes in the grey bushes. :D

In addition to text formatting I'm interested in the impact on image size. I'd love if we could set a custom min width or something. Perhaps a full screen light box effect when an image is clicked. For webcomics & visuals that are in a landscape format, it can get kind of cramped here and on Busy. I almost feel the need to insert an additional link to view the full size image in a new tab sometimes.

... You may be on to something..

If we could some how tie in Reputation to the ability to choose post width that would be friggin bad ass.. I like your thinkin!

Totally with you @klye. I had perfectly aligned post here…

https://steemit.com/travel/@lighteye/monasteries-of-eastern-serbia-eng-srp-manastiri-istochne-srbije

…and now I got chaos that I can't edit!

It is a bit frustrating.. I take pride in my formatting and this update dinked it!
