From a newbies perspective
I have been here a short time nothing compared to some on here. Steemit is a difficult concept to get along with, if you haven't got a clue about steem, bitcoins, cryptocurrency and all those othet things that I have never heard of you are really going to find it hard to get along with.
Fron what I have seen so far the people who are making the money on here are the ones that know everything there is to know or there young sexy and free. I have read loads of posts some I have understood others I though WT Frank is going on here, what on earth are they talking about. You have got to know what's going on for you to get along with Steemit if you don't your in the same place as me, maybe we could make a new one called dimsteemit for me and others like me.
I have wrote 3 posts this being my 4th and all including this one have bombed because I know diddly squat about where Steem comes from who buys it or where to sell it.
I have had someone talking me through the whole process @phoemixmaid who has helped a lot but if anyone out there have Steemit, Bitcoin, CryptoCurrency for dummies can I lend it please.
Ohhh and forgot to mention everyone talking about Whales, the bug guys and gals of steemit. Why are they whales, what have they done and how have they done it. Do we have to go out and buy a big net or harpoon to catch a whale
All I can say is I still haven't got a clue and Steemit fogs my brain argghh
You also earn money by commenting on other people's post. A lot of people miss that. And when you comment on someone else's post, upvote your own comment, just like you would your own post.
When you comment on someone else's post they are apt to check out your blog. Hang in there. I sent you an Upvote. Not Dollars, but a few cents. It's a start.

Hi @karenb54 - I finally got around to finding your posts. I have no idea about cryptocurrency and I've got about 5 articles now -- all making pennies. But you know, I don't expect to make a lot. I can't stress out about why the whales (whoever they are) aren't visiting me. I'm just going to write. I'll give it a good shot here and see what I can learn because I LOVE LEARNING. Anyway - don't give up hope. Write what you love. Give it a chance. Anything worth anything is worth time. Did that make any sense? Keep going, woman! You can do this.

In easy it's a personal blog, a place were you can write / post everything you want. And if your are lucky you get money because people like what you have to say.
If your lucky they have to read it first lol hopefully one day :)
Don't worry, everybody is just talking about SteemIt itself because it's really new and the one thing everyone has in common here is that they're interested in SteemIt. But over time it will be much more general interest and likely you'll be able to customize your feed so that you only see the things that interest you.
Whales are just people with a big stake in the project. They have lots of Steem Power. Either they were the first people involved in Steem (the developers), or they were rewarded handsomely for their blog posts, or they are big investors.

a lot of people are making lots on the steemit posts beause there are lot's of people like yourself wanting to learn more. You tube is also a great resource for learning more when you are ready for it.
I agree with everyone here treat it like a blog /social site and write about the things that interest you. xx
