Steemit to replace Youtube?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

I just encountered Steemit and so far its good. I'm still getting to grip with it. One thing that came to mind is how people will move all their videos/content to Steemit simply because of the fact that it pays, among others. What do you guys think? I just wanted to start a conversation about the possibility of this. Also one more thing, i haven't found a way on Steemit to actually upload a video. The only thing i see so far is the ability to add a link to a video. If that functionality is absent, I think Steemit can do even better and attract more users by adding it to the service/site. It could see more users migrate from Youtube. That will be very interesting to see.

What you're asking for is hard to do because of the decentralised nature of Steem - there is no central server, videos would have to be stored thousands of times all across the globe, which puts a lot of strain on the network.

I think I read about some people working on IPFS (Interplanetary Filesystem) a decentralised service for storing images. Not sure how hard it would be to adapt that to videos.

Yeah I understand how complex it would be. I don't know if you've heard about the Alexandra Project that for example a coin like Florin coin is using. From what i understand, it's some kind of decentralized platform for media on the blockchain. So perhaps there's a possibility of a link up or a use of such kind of technology.

I don't think there will be a way to upload videos to the blockchain which powers steemit, but I DO think people will upload videos to YouTube and then come here and EMBED their video and write a few paragraphs about it. Then we can up vote it and discuss it, here. Let's see what others think about this. Good post, and welcome to steemit!

Thanks. People posting their videos on youtube will be "free and more advertisement" for youtube lol. I feel if there's a way to incorporate videos on the blockchain, like say with the Alexandra project/ Florin project, that will bring more attention to blockchain technology and crypto as a whole. It will help Steemit greatly too. I'm sure it's something the Steemit developers are thinking of.

Well there's no hosting element to steemit, but I can imagine people will use youtube more for the hosting then come here for monetization. There's also the fact that Google is behind youtube and I don't think they'll just roll over to anyone else.

Yeah. That's a slight disadvantage to Steemit although you can argue it's not significant. What if say, youtube or services like that didn't exist. How would users be able to post content like videos on Steemit. If there was a way for them to incorporate it, that would be great for Steemit.
