Did I join Steemit too late? What is everyone Freeking out about?

in #steemit8 years ago

I am reading all these posts about "Jumping Ship" and death to Steemit. Whats going on here? I thought this place was brand new, why is everyone saying its "doomed"?  I noticed the top trending post is like 1,000$

Thats pretty sick!  I would take that!

Can't change my trending feed and I don't care much about The Bitcoin

Overall, I get this feeling of fakeness. Nobody talks shit. Which is wierd. Kind of like everyone is scared or have realized the only way to make money is to stick a nose up the right persons ass? anyways I think this is a pretty cool idea, but i'm far behind on The Bitcoin idea. I'll probably stick around for awhile to check it out, can't hurt.

Sort:

I am a Bitcoin expert and I joined Steemit a few months ago because I wanted to be an early adopter. Back then, people were saying, "it's too late to be an early adopter." Now they are saying it's time to give it up. The reason is because the price has dropped a lot, and people have left their jobs to concentrate on this social network.

Steem is not Bitcoin no more than the Yuan is the Dollar. Both paper currencies use banks and both crypto currencies use a (different) blockchain. They don't mix.

I adopted Bitcoin when it was at $1.80, saw it go to $40.00 and then drop back down to $8.00. Many yelled that Bitcoin was "done". When a website was hacked, the screamed that Bitcoin was hacked. People wanted to see the price drop so they could get in at a lower price. This is where we kind of are with Steem. The difference is there are people that made a lot of free money for posting content and now they are panic selling with no regard to the fact that 1btc worth of Steem can sway the Steem market a ton. Many selling a ton of Steem every week can stupidly sway the market to zero (actually 0.0004). These same guys have massive amounts of Steem tied up in SP which can't be taken out right away, so they are actually cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

It's small and easily manipulated. But, if there is value in Steem, then Steem will go up and equalize higher and higher in the future.

I am in it for the long run. Price doesn't matter that much. It will go back up!

Back to The Bitcoin. You must be rich, cause after joining here I looked at the price of 1 coin and its over $600. And you got them a $2?
I think i'll take your word. So do you think 1steem will be $600 some day? I should probably hold onto these 10 I have!

Rich? It's a relative term. I rent and have no car. I live in the city, so I don't need a car. I retired 3 years ago and live a simple life with no debt and no taxes. Yeah. I feel rich but I am no Gates or Soros. (with property comes the government with their hands out)

I don't think of Steem or Bitcoin going to or being "At $600.00"
I believe that a Big Mac will eventually be "At $600.00"
Right now, an ounce of gold is at 2 Bitcoins (roughly), and I think it will maintain that relationship.
Where I live, they are printing the paper currency out of existence as all paper currencies have a tendency to do.

Mcdonalds selling big macs at $600 and they wont be in business!
But that is an interesting way to look at it, I never thought like that

You arrived at just the right moment for you - not a moment too soon, not a moment too late ;)

A great time to buy Steem - you didn't want to buy at $4 did you? ;)

I came to earn, not to buy, but buying now is a bargain!!...as well as earning!

I'm not sure what that really means. From what it sounds like, I don't really know how to buy steem in the first place, and I don't know how much 1steem is? Is 4$ alot?

1 Steem = approx. $0.30 - so $4 is a lot! Get some Bitcoin, then you buy some Steem direct from your wallet.

Let's just say that back in july you could get like 400$ for a single comment or 1000$+ for making a nice intro post. Now that the payouts are finding equilibrium, some think it's the end of the world. As you pointed out though, everything is ok.

Well I'll bring some spice to this place!
Push all the nerdy stuff to the side

You're the first I've heard say anything on my feed about this. I'm in love with this app & I'm new as fuck to bitcoin(steem). Don't care much but would love to get paid for what I love doing!! I just told a lot to switch + Ditching facebook is making my brain healthier already! Not even joking that site is cancer for my life. I actually feel the complete opposite as you say these folks do, they're going to only ruin it for themselves. Or they just want to keep it all for them self which I kinda don't mind :3 :P eitherway I'll be steemin it up!

What do you expect? Most people will sell you a ton of shit if they think you will buy it. If they ditch it it's on them, but this is the wave of the future, and it isn't going anywhere with the support of people wanting to promote it. Keep your chin up and it'll be the best move ever, and i have to agree on the whole facebook thing, it's only a place to be nosey and learn everyone else's business.

The reason nobody talks shit is because your reputation is crucial on Steemit. Pissing people off and being an ass hole will get you flagged/ downvoted ultimately leading to less payouts and rewards. The Users of Steemit are incentivized to play nice :) It's in their own interest.

That is good to know. I see some posts get like 6flags within a couple minutes of posting. Scary.

That's exactly the point. Because they have external incentives to "play nice", they don't get to express their true selves. We feel censored by some looming shadow of "If I say the wrong thing, I'll no longer be able to make money".

Normally, this isn't that important, but on a site like Steemit, where free-thinkers are plentiful, it's annoying to feel like certain topics or attitudes aren't wanted here. Even if I might agree with it. Personally, I don't mind the kindness here. It makes for a pleasant community.

But I still can't deny what I said above. It makes the kindness somewhat artificial.

It is a bit fakey, but that will wear down too. When I joined everyone was upset about some of the big bloggers who had just joined. I think the current state of society is "Upset". Give this a try and see if it works for you.

Have fun.

I'm not upset, I'm pretty happy about this $8 this post has! At level 60 how much do you get from a post?

Just have fun, blog about what you like, try out different stuff, If you make money out of it good ;)

got $8! is that for real? winning!

Oh! & dont let this kitty fool you I'll shittalk you or anyone else anyday ! :3

Rrraaarrrr. Could this be the first Steemit Cat fight in the making?
I wonder if that would be a hit and get some 15K like extie talked about

Here is the problem: https://steemit.com/steemit/@extie-dasilva/the-anomoly-of-the-usd15-000-steemit-post

I believe that emphasising the big payouts that precious few of us can ever realistically hope to achieve causes people to have a negative feeling toward their work when in fact it makes tiny monetary rewards. One is bound to feel something of a failure when hearing that Steemit is where you get thousands of dollars for posting content but the reality for most is rewards counted in cents not dollars. Me, I just take whatever positive comes my way (nice replies, upvotes, more followers) and not just the money, which only rarely remotely compensates for the time and effort I put into my posts.

I just read your post. Wow, I didn't know someone made 15k in 1 post. Crazy!
Maybe I'll just have to do some crazy stuff for steemit
Snowboard in a bikini?
People seem to like that sort of stuff for some reason ;)

I know i like that sort of stuff.
Pretty sure this "cult" you speak of would reward you quite nicely if you did a post with that!

Steemit is a good vision. Contributors getting rewarded should be a model for the entire web. Anyways some people do rant here about the shortcomings of the network. Others do the art thing and other interests. It is a real diverse group here.

I think its a good idea too! I'm starting to notice some interesting posts like that latte art is pretty amazing. She makes all sorts of cool designs, I need to learn to do that
