11 Steemit Handle Hacks when your name is already taken

Steemit Handle Hacks.jpg

As Steemit becomes more popular there will be an enormous amount of disgruntled users who fail to grab their own name for their Steem handle. And no it's not because they were too late to the party but rather in the early days Steemians were rewarded for creating multiple accounts as they farmed Steem.

I found one account who was responsible for creating over 200 Steem handles seemingly for the reward given during the new account creation process in the early days. (More on that later)

But, the worse part is they choose common users names and have effectively locked away those accounts for eternity unless they kept all the passwords and are just Steem Squatters.

So here are 11 Steemit Handle Hacks if you're looking to jump aboard the Steem Train and find your ideal Steemit handle is already taken.

11 Steemit Handle Hacks

Here are a few famous bloggers and writers who have zero chance of getting their own handle:-

Gary Vaynerchuk (Vayner Media)
J.K Rowling (Author)
Darren Rowse (ProBlogger)
Rand Fishkin (SEOMoz)
Neil Patel (KISSmetric)
James Altucher (Author)

So let's see if we can help them find a new Steemit handle for when they join the platform.

1. Shorten your name

Shortening your name can still make it relevant.

@GaryVay
@Randfish
@JamesAlt

2. Use Your Initials

Try using your initials or break out that middle initial.

@GaryV
@DRowse
@NeilP
@JKR

3. Use part of your name

If you're early enough you might find one of your names is still available.

@Rand
@Rowse
@Rowling

4. Make it the 'real' you

Sometimes adding 'Real' to your name can make you real.

@RealgGaryV
@TheRealRowse
@RealRowling

5. Make it 'official'

Maybe you prefer a more 'official' title.

@OfficialJKR
@OfficialRand
@OfficialAltucher

6. Add 'this is'

'This is' another common way to introduce yourself.

@ThisIsGary
@ThisIsNeil
@ThisIsDarren

7. Add 'I am'

Adding 'I am' also makes a statement.

@IamGaryV
@IamJKRowling
@IamRand

8. Use your brand

If your name isn't available maybe your brand is.

@Problogger
@Vaynermedia
@Kissmetric

9. Add a Location

Be proud of your heritage and add your location.

@GaryNYC
@DarrenRowseAU
@RandFishkinUSA

10. Add 'Ms' , 'Miss', 'Mr', 'Dr'

You could go really formal and add your title.

@MrPatel
@MsRowling
@MasterAltucher

11. Abbreviate with letters

And abbreviating with letters could also work, as it has for Gary Vaynerchuk.

@GaryVee

So as you can see there are plenty of ways to represent yourself on a new Social Media Platform like Steemit.com, but the earlier you join, the more chance you have of securing your brand.

However, all is not lost if you are late to the party.

Just grab a handle and #introduceyourself

And one final tip for creating a new Steem account on Steemit is to make sure you SAVE that password or you might be the person that just blocked that perfect Steemit name. @furiouspete123 learned this the hard way ;-)

This is really going to be an issue as we get bigger. With no mechanism for reusing abandoned names; 10 years from now there are going to be a lot of '@m4tt.-.c74rk3.-'style names.
My first facebook post about steemit was to tell my friends to secure their own name.

@therealjust2random agrees with this post.

@ThisisJust2Random ;-)

It's actually a problem in all Social Media, Facebook actually allows you to claim your own name if you have more rights to it than a squatter.
I was surprised at how many 'celeb' names were already taken.
Tim Ferris was but that could actually be him ;-)

There are plenty of Matt Clarke's though; and we each share the Screen name.
It's only in the background somewhere that I'm mattclarke#452863388651.
Like discord, I guess.

I've actually already looked at a heap of first names for my friends; Adam, Cara, Tim, Paul, etc were all taken, and are all just sitting there at rep 25. I actually wondered if Steemit INC grabbed them right at the start... or has someone else created them all and will sell them in due course...

In my research, most of the common names were taken. I suspect they just worked through a babies name book or something. Each appeared to net around 64 steem, which was consolidated into a single account.

Rinse and Repeat.

I'm yet to name names until I fully understand what was going on during the birth of this token.

For me the 1Million account celebration will be worthless. Only active users matter.

This is excellent advice. I used a third-party site to buy a Steemit account just to secure the name of my website.
