How do notifications work on Steemit?

Do I have to manually check, whether there has been a reply/comment on my blog, or somewhere I posted, or is there a notificaiton system in place that will let me know.

The reason I am writing is that I didn't see any notifications so far (have been on for a few hours 😀), but I did see some activity that I had to check manually.
