RE: Want to see the top posts in last 24 hours - rank calculated by minnow 1, dolphin 2, whale 3, megawhale 4

in #steemit8 years ago

what is your suggestion then? I have all the data and can parse it however is needed
I know a lot of posts dont get whalevotes for a while, so while what you say is certainly part of what happens, the reverse happens too

Sort:

as an example, here are the top 5 trending posts right now... the key point to look at is the number of votes in the first 15 minutes, because thats bots and people anticipating bots....

The only one that seems to not have been auto upvote pinned to the top of the page is the andrewfoodlist one, and tbh what it looks like there is he just got lucky and ned saw his post... and somebody seems to have benefitted mainly from his own upvote and other upvotes associated with him.

as a side note, this effect has gotten way worse since they started paying posts out for a month afterwards.

To me, a good statistic is what percentage of posts making more than X do so without a MW vote in the first 16 minutes. I think youll find that for X>2000, that number is actually quite low.

very few posts make >$2000 so clearly posts without MW votes will have very few >$2000
To me, I am deemphasising the dollars and counting the people, with a small range of multiplier. Granted, the onscreen time for trending makes for a disproportionate effect, but maybe if we can devise a ranking system that is more reflective of overall value to the community as evidenced by the sheer number of upvotes by real people, then this ranking could be an alternate way for something to be "pinned"

very few posts make >$2000 so clearly posts without MW votes will have very few >$2000

The key part of that was "in the first 16 minutes", but anyway, i see your point about disregarding the money.

TBH, im not 100% sure even how they determine "trending" its not all $ (though total $ earned clearly plays a role.)

so the numbers [126 168 20 13]

thats minnow votes, dolphin votes, whale votes, MW votes?

Keep up the good work guys. I did notice that when I posted a few days ago, like 47 bots upvoted right away. It happened to 2 or 3 of my posts. Now they have done that to my last few posts. See my blog when you get a chance. Thanks.

@streetstyle

yeah those were just plankton bots that were running wild for a bit then got shut down.

Its something ive been thinking about... tbh i don't really know... thats the thing... once a whale "rings the bell" theres really no way to unring it. Id say try to look at the amount of dolphin and minnow votes the posts get before the first whale votes, but the whales are really really quick... as a funny example, that famous makeup post got several whale votes in the first two minutes it was up (it was a 9 minute video).

Yeah, there are some posts that get some minnow and dolphin groundswell first, and that attracts whales... but i think youll find two things:

  1. Its more the exception than the norm, especially for the highest earning posts.
  2. Its happening less and less frequently.

I think making the platform open source is a big step in the right direction... i had actually given up and decided to sell off before that happened... now im more on the fence.....

gee, how long has steemit been out of beta?
have any of the rules been set in stone?
steemit doesnt have to outrun the bear, it just needs to be better than reddit for now

Ha fair enough i suppose. But reddit has a head start. And in a way so does the bear.

And yeah, i recognize its still in beta. And at the end of the day, i already took 100K profit on my investment... so maybe i should have faith in the people who already made me a small boatload of money.

In the past week or so ive been like half a click away from powering up the last 5.5k steem im holding and half a click away from selling it off... usually the later right after i look at the front page. Ill probably end up powering it up... the influx of users from china is too big to ignore...

but i dont know...better than reddit... are we... im not really much of a reddit guy maybe my standards are too high.
