Oh no! I hope the car problem is an easy fix! And that your hip feels better tomorrow. A terrible day, indeed! Do you play songs that your audience might remember from childhood? Home on the Range and Take Me Out to the Ballgame type songs?

Oh no, I play songs that they will remember from adulthood. Sinatra, Dean Martin etc, movie themes. Many of the songs I have now in my repertoire, are songs that audience members have asked me about.

Surprise them with a kid song once in a while and see how they react!

Many times, especially for my regular clients, my performance coincides with their monthly 'birthday party'.
I play Happy Birthday, followed by "How old are you, you live in a zoo, you look like a monkey, and you smell like one too".
That always gets a laugh, except at the more upscale places.

Do they usually sing along with the songs you play?

Yes, many times.
I play the song "Up on the Roof" by the drifters (I think), and I start out by saying "I really need y'all to help me, at the end of each line, where I sing.
"When this old world starts getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face " then y'all sing (Up on the roof) "Don't worry, I'll cue you".
And they invariably do sing those parts.
At the end, I say "I love it when you sing and I get paid" ha ha (they invariably laugh)
In the song "there's a kind of hush" by Herman's Hermits, there is a spot after the second verse just before the instrumental break, where I say "Now every body sing", and it's just La la lalala la.
Someone took a video of that once with their phone and sent it to me.
I was amazed that nearly everyone continued to sing after I started back after the break.

I do "Sweet Caroline", everyone sings that.

That is a link to a facebook video, I hope you can see it @melinda010100
Are you on FB? If so, would you tell me how to find you? I'll send you a friend request.
There are a lot of videos of me playing that I'm not comfortable putting on YTube.

Here is one of me schmoozing my audience @melinda010100

So, the Mechanic I've been using, just told me that "to diagnose the problem" would be $98.
He said that it sounded like it was "in limp mode" meaning it had put itself there to protect itself, in which case it could be something that would be fixed cheaper that a full replacement.
Replacement would be $2,000+
I spent $2,000 to buy it, new brakes were over $350 if I remember right, new heater core was over $800, shocks and struts were another $650...
He pointed out, that if I were to get another used vehicle, I had no guarantee that I wouldn't be 'inheriting' the same or worse issues with that vehicle.
What to do, what to do.
I can't sell this van with a defective transmission, so it is fix or replace, or throw away all I've got invested in this van for the price of junk.

What a rollercoaster of a day! Lots of mistakes made by AAA in helping me get a rental so I can meet my obligations while I try to get a repair or something else to drive, but finally it all fell together and I now have a vehicle for the next week, and $100 less that the original quote.
I can sleep better tonight now.
