Steemit Class: Minnows, Dolphins, Whales: Who Are They?

A minnow! Sorry?

A minnow. Never heard.

Starting in steemit was a bit confusing for me. For sure every community has their own vocabulary, procedures etc. It takes time till to get familiar and to understand.

Honestly, I had to look up minnow on Google. I am not a native speaker and I have never heard about it. Of course dolphins and whales I know. So, checking Google I saw it is a small fish. Ah, I am a small fish. 😊

For now, I would call myself a newbie since I have to learn the basics.

Minnows - the smallest fish in the water

Welcome to steemit and to be a minnow. As a minnow, you have less steem power. Your influence is really low. With latest Hardfork 19 you see at least, that a upvote click is bringing some cents into the game. Gladly.

To be able to influence a post you need 100s of minnows or more. Alone you can’t move it anything.

It is a long way to become a dolphin. Slowly and steady you have to make your way up.

Dolphins - swim with the waves

Via good posts or investments, the dolphin gained already a lot of steam power. Influencing of posts is already possible and upvotes lead to significant amount increases. Minnows will follow if a post got dolphins attentions.

Power comes from power: due to increased steem power more and more power is slowly generated. Making the dolphins bigger every day at a speed, which is ultra-fast for a minnow.

Whales - create waves

Incredible steem power is owned by a whale. A whale is a really rare user on steemit. Over time his steem power went to an insane level. A whale can influence heavily a post. One click and he set a big signal.

How do you find a whale? Look under the “trending posts” category. You will find them, definitely.

A Different Distribution of Users

An official distribution of users can be found on steemd. I like this view on users and how much steem power/$ they have.

In the table, we have different levels: dust, newbie (that is me), user, superuser, hero, superhero and legend.

Looking at the 2 lowest levels (dust, newbie) they must the minnows from my understanding. They make 89% of the user base. Ouch.

The next 3 levels (user, superuser, hero) are the dolphins, which is over 10% of all users.

Finally the mysterious whales with the level superhero and legend: 0.12%.

##My Way As a Little Fish##

I want to swim up in the steemit ocean. I have strong ambitions like every little fish. Let’s see how much power we can get together. Every day a little bit more food (steem power).
