Humanity's Endgame - What is it?

in #steemit10 years ago

Human population has grown exponentially over the last few decades, and there seems to be nothing there to stop it. Unfortunately, same is the case with the population of different animals except that instead of increasing they are decreasing. Deforestation and global warming are at an all time high, and there's nothing indicating that things will start to cool down next year or so. Things are going downhill, and downhill fast.

When I think about all these things, I feel the pessimism in me that I didn't know was there.

I start asking myself questions like, Where are we heading? What is the endgame of humanity? Is there a way back from this path to inevitable destruction?

Sadly, I don't know the answer. The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing day by day, year by year and it's spiraling out of control. A decade back, environmental campaigns were directed towards individual efforts: what an average person can do to preserve the environment. Unfortunately, right now, the individual efforts mean little less than nothing obviously. The situation has gotten much worse, and has went downhill much further than it had ever gotten before.

The future seems grim, dark and foggy. This is a road dotted with points of no return. We have crossed most of them.

Humans are the biggest cause of the extinction of various animal species. It is mind boggling how wanderers and hunters would kill animals and hunt them to extinction, decimating the ecosystem in the process. Right now, we are knowingly pushing different animal species to the edge of extinction merely for ornamental purposes. We skin rhinos just so we can have their tusks in our homes for display. Sounds nice, right?

Sometimes, I wonder if human race is even worth saving in the end. You can clearly guess the level pessimism I have in me. The fact that we have hunted and are still hunting animals to extinction, the fact that we prefer money and an "easy life" instead of the betterment and safety of this earth, the fact that there are STILL climate change and global warming deniers among us leads me to believe that perhaps we have it coming. Perhaps, it is our destiny to go down that road of devastation and ultimate destruction. Perhaps, it is what we deserve.

We can only ever hope to imagine righting our wrongs that we have done to this planet only if we agree on two things: Climate change and global warming are real, and that they are the biggest issues of our lifetimes. Issues that are certain to define our future and the survival of our species.

I cannot see this happening in the near future. Or in any future for that matter.
