Reputation, Dangerous Whales and How to Defend Against it.

Reputation

In today's society we are all tied to a concept where popularity is everything, and now more in social networks (almost all). I'm going to talk about reputation as an excuse for the classification of human beings, in terms of their abilities. How is it possible that currently almost all are based on the amount of reputation we have? And in great people who can sink in a second, yes I refer to you whales.

This theme came to my mind thanks to an episode of Blackmirror, it was the catalyst for it, it left me thinking for several weeks, trying to digest the reality that is shown there, and the saddest, to realize that it is not something alien, that's why I decided to touch this topic in a publication because it is not something other than Steemit. Here we have a reputation system which helps us find a popular and influential person, those who have +60 reputation, have great power of positive and negative influence.

This is a bit scary.

I've seen people with an acceptable (normal) reputation number starting at +30, what usually a new user is emerging, or people who do not spend a lot of time on Steemit to work on their reputation. I have seen those people (the aforementioned) fall into a deep vacuum with -1 reputation in a few hours, for different reasons, many of these people do not understand the game of Steemit, and even here is when the most terrifying happens.

A whale gives you downvote

You are dead in the network, his power is so great that it can sink your profile, it is enough to make an error so that you are added to a blacklist which is later spread in his influences, then that downvote rain begins and you can look simply as your account dies. It's scary, those people with so much power in a social network are afraid. The only option you have is to try to scale back, but your username has already gained a bad reputation.

My recommendation to avoid the downvotes rain:

1. Read the FAQ and terms of use of Steemit:

It is necessary before starting, if you do not understand English you can use the translator, do not expect someone to downvote you or have to give you a warning, it is always good to start with a good base and be clear about what you can do and what not.

2. Do not wait for a whale to discover you:

Nothing is better than building your profile with a solid wall of real followers, interact, make friends, get involved in the different activities: contests and challenges. Make sure you have followers who love you for your content, not because someone with great influence has trending you, because as those followers arrive, they can leave so quickly and the whales can make their soldiers sink (if you make a mistake). Many recognized whales are actually wrong, power goes to their heads and they are not pleasant people with the public compared to others.

3. Make a real and unique content:

The more variety of content you have more public profile, be authentic in these times can be difficult because it seems that everything has been invented, but it is not impossible, just write your own opinions on a given theme, be yourself. This is one of the most important things.

4. Be constant and perseverant:

It will happen that you will publish something and you will not get the attention you think it deserves, it is very normal, not all people in Steemit have our same tastes, my suggestion is that if you are not succeeding you should change the subject , try to talk about other things, inquire about your tastes, because Steemit is a social network that allows you to talk about what you want, sure that in your life incredible things happen that you want to tell, talk about a song that led you to do Something at a certain time in your life or a movie. There are so many things that move us inside and are able to influence us directly, that it is impossible for you to feel that you have nothing to offer, we all have many things that we can talk about and take advantage of in this social network.

5. If it's not your thing, quit:

If it bothers you to spend time on the blog, if it bores you or if you feel it's not your thing, retreat, why? Although it is an easy way to earn income, many people come in believing that simply writing "anything" will earn money, and this is not the case, this type of people usually make publications that have no effort (and this it can be noticed just looking at it), they do not spend time to get involved in the community, they are usually the ones who commit plagiarism and spam generic comments to generate some followers.

Why did I make this post?

My intention to write this was mainly to vent, with what I think about the way in which social networks are administered and how regular users are condemned to want to be popular, when behind this we forget that who is on the other side of the screen are human beings.

This post is not to say that the whales are bad, they are NOT, they really help the emergence of each user, but my advice goes to the fact of being self-sufficient to generate our own audience because it is one of the most important things when our friends Whales are not around. Another purpose I have in writing this is to contribute what I have learned in the short time I have been at Steemit, and I hope this helps others.

Avoid the nosedive

Thanks for the insights! I only got it last night that there are "whale wars" going on and i was like: wtf?!? why?!?!

Hahaha, it happens yea, thanks for reading me :)
