Does our reputation score need to be incorporated into post rewards

in #steemit7 years ago

There was a good discussion this morning on Discord between a few of the Aussies regarding to tweaking the way rewards work.

One of the better suggestions was to actually bring the Reputation score into the equation. This would go a long way to encourage users to work harder towards building a good reputation as it could then impact their potential post payouts.
This could be implemented at a vote multiplier so that any vote you give will not be constant, your vote between different users will give varied outcomes based on their reputations.

This would more than likely need a modification of the algorithm to decide on how to build reputation as it is still very possible for a shitpost creator to have a high reputation purely because of bought votes. Possibly voting bots can be excluded from the calculations and have a greater emphasis placed on reader engagement and attracting new readers.
With this model, the reputation would be a very fluid score that can fluctuate, those that aren't posting would have reputations shrinking and those that put in the work would have higher reputations and be rewarded for their effort.

The other side effect would possibly be a slight reduction in flag wars as this will result in reduced payouts. Currently with a -19 reputation you can still get the same payout as someone with a 62 reputation.

This is just some food for thought, I'd love to hear some opinions. I think anything to make the system fairer for those who put in the effort would go a long way to creating an environment of quality posts rather than a large quantity of shitposts.

Nice post, it makes perfect sense for one's reputation to weigh in too!

I twould be pretty cool for the rep to be meaningful rather than a vanity metric :) Quite like the ideas you've come up with too :D

goatsig

It really was a good conversation. Many suggestions, and multiple people of various levels and account ages being involved too. Hopefully something comes from it

Very well interesting and I think the idea makes a lot of sense

Interesting thoughts/
I was looking at some "top" voters the other day.
They were set to take the large % of curation / voting rewards
Yet the account reps where 25, with zero posts, and few if any comments etc. But the accounts had large amounts SP in them.

So basically they are ALT accounts, that have had SP transferred to them to fund bot votes.

So for authors, zero reading was done, and bots ran away with the money.

Does this benefit the platform?

exactly 100%. I'm sure down the road there could be a metric for quality curation. Something needs to be done.

At the moment is seems to be whale bots voting for whale posts for whale benefits.
No probs if your a whale! (a lot like MSM or bankers, making rules, for their own benefit ie TOP heavy $$ ponzi schemes)

But big probs for growth of the platform base IMHO

Minnows just give up after a few non-earning posts - and that is where the base growth comes from IMHO

Spreading the 'income' across the platform, rewarding curation, getting rid of bot votes, will all improve human "interaction", which will grow the platform IMHO

very true. Thanks for your thoughts. Hopefully someone influential might read this and make some waves.

Maybe, but there in lies the problem
Would we expect the 'bankers' to fix the banking system?
Would whales, change a system that primarily benefits whales?

Perhaps only if they have fore-sight re the platform &/or took the time to actually see the problems at the base.

Most whale posts I have seen on the topic, basically say the same thing,

"stop BTCHn, thats the way it works & I'm doing OK"

But we plankton live in hope, for the sake of the platforms future in my case.

Steem have 2 choices IMHO,
a) fix it or
b) watch someone steal the concept & start a new brandname using it.

I'm still unsure what the rep is even used for. Like you said, shitposts can have high reps simply because of bought votes and SP. I like the idea and wonder why something relevant wasn't implemented from the get go.

Thanks mate. It'd be great to have someone bring it up during the big Q&A session with the Witness's, STINC Devs and Whales being held on MSP Waves. I wont be there, but I assume Ausbitbank will be

I feel that this post was directed at me, my rep and my shit posts 😐 I'm boycotting your blog in protest and I won't return until your next post. Have a good day sir..

No it wasn't actually, scroll back up the chat in TA mate, you'll see where it all started.
And I love your shitposts, they are like the Mr Whippy of the shitposts. :)

Yeah I was "taking a piss" as u guys say. My blog is actually the best blog in the world I'm pretty sure 😛
