There are about 2000 new registrations on Steemit per day. It is not that much but on the other hand it is about 1% of the total users. Per day. If the boom continues, and I believe so, Steemit gets Facebook into serious troubles within two years. It won't beat Facebook in the number of users but it will most definitely weak FB's position on stock exchange which is even worse for such a company.
But FB is not waiting to see what happens. They keep a close eye out and if it get's too big too fast, they will make an irresistible offer, which also benefits SteemIt in general, that they just have to sell and collaborate. They would be stupid not too, getting access to almost 2 billion customers on Facebook.
