#Steemit Warning: Keep your darn key's where it belongs - You may have exposed yourself.

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemians,

It's so painful when you come across posts like this. It could be you someday, it could be me. It can happen to anyone. You never know when you are exposed.

There are thieves out there, making a very handsome amount out of your ignorance.I don't blame them for that. It's just what they are good at or perhaps used to it. Nonetheless, certainly not trying to glorify them. But I can't stop them either.

That's how they are making their living. There's no moral check on the thieves. There's no Mirror where they can look at their ugly faces or if there's one, they don't see it.

However there is one Mirror for you and that is;

Keep your darn key's where it belongs.

If they are making money out of your ignorance, then why shouldn't you make an effort to change that? I guess it isn't harder than seeing this.

How to keep your account safe

  • First thing first, copy all your private key's, save it in a notepad or write in your diary. Keep it offline.
  • Don't ever use your Master Password. It should only be used if you would like to change your key's.
  • Do not CLICK malicious, spamy, shortened (via tinyurl and similar services) and weird LINKS sent by users in your wallet with a minimal amount.
  • Uncheck the 'keep me logged in' box.

  • Make sure that your Browser never store/saves your password. There's a potential threat of Malware's. You may be hosting some junk from that porn sites. Watch out! :)

  • Clear your browsers from already stored passwords. For Chrome, got to Settings → Advanced → Password and forms → Manage Passwords and remove passwords for Steemit, if there's any.

  • Use private key for Transfers, Market orders only.

  • Use posting key for posting, commenting, upvoting, claiming rewards etc. Even if it's exposed, your funds are secure.

If the posting key gets stolen, the hacker can still not steal the money out of your wallet. So it decreases the risk of theft considerably, and you can always change the posting key with your master key if it gets stolen.

As a precaution, you should change your master password now (since you've used it all this time to login and exposed it to unnecessary risk). Make sure you have your current password backed up, and the new password too!

I hope after all this you should be fine. I know many of you must have gone through the @steemitblog and the faq section of #Steemit, hence would know about all this. But the fact that some of the users are still looted, which means it needs a little more emphasize.

While copy pasting/ writing steemit password can be stressful, it best for security. Great.

I use 'sticky notes' and 'Notepad' for desktop. Takes a sec but worth it.

thank you for the info how to make our account all safe from hacker's hands This info is very important for the user of his special steemit me @danarilmu

Thank you! for taking time to read. This is a little old write up things have changed since then so you will have to take extra precaution. Avoid clicking on suspicious links and comments. The number of hacks have been increased since then. Better to stay safe than being sorry. Enjoy!

@ghayas Fantastic article which act as a reminder to all computer users that one of the culprit to password theft is actually your own laptop or computer. So far I read post about keep the master password and maybe include the keys at the safe place or even print a hardcopy then laminate it and put it in a safe deposit box.
Your guide to set off the save password option in the browser came in timely.
For me, I also installed a cache cleaner named as "ccleaner" which is availble for free download. It can set to clean every thing that may store with the computer or laptop include password.
Anyway, we have to think of all possibilities
Cheers

Well I have a copy of my Keys at all the places such as one copy in my Email, Laptop and Desktop PC. Don't need to print because I keep changing it from time to time...

@ghayas that's true. I have not seen any members of our group print it. But this is one option ( maybe a joke ) to print it.
btw, I have not change the master password before. I am a little sceptical about it. I assumed it is quite straight forward , right ?

Yeah, it's a no brainer. Pretty much easy,. If you are still unsure, try Youtube for some great tutorials. But it's not necessary to change, just in case..
