Please, Stop the Abuse

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Hello, I'm a anal retentive web developer, formerly a web designer, and I have a message for all the Steemians out there. Actually, it's a plea.

Please, have mercy on the poor markup in your posts.

Every day on Steemit, markup is abused.

It doesn't know what it has done. I just knows that it isn't supposed to be like this. It isn't supposed to be used like this.

Headers are delegated to the task of increasing font sizes. Quote tags are used for common text, that isn't a quote.

The proud and noble header is not meant to be used in this way. It is an announcer, telling the world what the coming paragraph is about. It isn't meant to just make your text larger, because you think it looks better.

Font sizes on Steemit are standardized. People can increase it if they want to.

Please, stop abusing headers and quote tags. They can't ask you themselves, so I'm asking for them.

I've been using Gingko as my preferred article editing tool de jure and I'm a long-time Markdown user in general, and I hope to high Hell that I've not tortured headers as cruely as I've seen others doing on the platform. [grin]

It helps a lot when you can see the effect on your text as you go, rather than having a tiny editing box and the render tucked down below. I suspect that and people not actually thinking about what it is they want to say is probably hurting things.

TL;DR: Jesus Christ, can we get a decent editor up in this thang, yo?

Totally agree. The stupid little tiny edit box is a pain in the ass. I don't mind the preview being below so much, until a post starts to get really long. After that I have to take the post off site to finish it.

I don't think I make any primary posts that don't count as "stupidly long." :)

Man, i'm doing my best not the hurt the poor formatting of steemit ^^ Btw, i wanted to tell you that i included you in my latest post. You gave me a lot of great feedback, and i just wanted to say thank you. I know it's not much, but i just really wanted to say thank you that welcomed me to steemit :)

LOL! No problem.

I find your efforts in both 3D printing and the fake leather interesting an awesome.

Awwww. Poor markups!

I have, one or twice, brutally abused the headers to draw attention. In my defense, it's a "designer" thing. Design school taught me about this whole hierarchy of information thing that has left me with an irrepressible urge to make certain things bigger, bolder, or in some other way more "important."

I'll try to mend my evil ways!

Bold can be used in some cases.

Other times, yeah, maybe headers can be slightly abused. But never put your entire post in headers like some do.

An entire post of headers? That works destroy the hierarchy of information? What kind of malevolent being would do such an awful thing?!

I agree with you,but at times there are posts that do require some extra upmarking more often than others (especially when there is not too much text, or prose, more precisely)

If a given article is image-heavy, that's a good sign that you need less marking up, not more.

You don't want to detract from the image, after all. Any prose that lies around it should support that image, and abusing header formatting tags makes the text heavier, makes the text more attractive to the eye. If you care about the non-prose content, you want to push the text further back, not drag it forward.

Well you are right... I meant this:

Here headings and quotations place well defined parameters for the images...

Though center-justifying the headers is a step too far and breaks the line of reading on every section.

It's the right place to use Header but it's an overly-elaborated one.

LOL i remember among the first things I got told when entering Steemit was not to upvote my own stuff xD okay I read you about what you say, but i totally disagree-- there are many possible styles, and centering a header is definitely a valid and legit one!
