terms of service, privacy policy

So, this morning I logged on and was forced to agree to a privacy policy before accessing the site. I don't spend much time keeping up with the technical side of things, could someone help me out please? Is steemit now run by a corporation? What is the point of all this? I don't like it, and I'm feeling like it's a coffin nail.
