The lion's share

in #steemit7 years ago

I've been wondering about voting on steemit for a little while now, my votes placed on other users I mean. I have a few options when it comes to placing my votes, just like everyone; Vote on a post or vote on a reply. My 100 percent vote isn't worth much, only around $0.07 me being such a small account and all, however I am wondering where my vote is best placed; On a post or reply to one of my own.

I like rewarding those who comment on my posts which is why I try and throw some votes around for those replying to me. It shows they have read the post, or at least scanned it, and I appreciate them taking the time to do so, and then replying. The way I understand it though is that votes under $0.02 in value are not actually paid out to that user. (If someone could clarify that I would be very grateful.) I guess that means I either don't vote on comments at all, or I need to vote at a minimum of $0.02 to actually reward them. The other thing is that with limited voting power it's difficult to vote on everyone's replies if there's a lot of them on a particular post.

I also like voting on posts that I enjoy reading, but again, there's only so many votes to go around. That's the conundrum. I think to date the lion's share of my votes go towards people's posts, not replies, but could that be the wrong way to go? Should I be rewarding those who take the time to read and comment on my posts a little more than other people's actual posts? To be honest I don't know the answer.

I suppose it doesn't mean much to either group, content creators or those making replies, as my vote value is so low but still, sometimes just getting a vote can be good for a person's confidence right? I certainly feel that way myself anyway.

I'd be interested to hear some perspectives from other users when it comes to this subject. Vote to reward those commenting, vote to reward content creators or a balance of both?

@abh12345 did a cool post not long ago about identifying a users top 5 accounts who gained your upvote over the last 14 days. It's a good concept and an interesting stat to know I think. You can see the post by clicking here. It's sort of relevant to my own thoughts here in this post.

I always have like 79-82% voting power left because of Fanbase. I miss so many posts that to me it’s important to have an autovote for my favorite steemians. I want to make sure they keep posting because in the end they make steemit what it is. It is tough because I also want to reward those commenting on my posts too, that’s why on my last post I tired out steem bounty. In the end I think it’s better to be rewarded for the post so I try and save as much voting power for that because I know people are working hard on their posts.

I don't use any voting bots but then I have the time to scan my feed quite regularly so pretty much always see posts from those I follow. I like the ability to I crease and decrease rewards commensurate to each post I read. Still, I get why you use an auto vote thing. Makes sense if you're tine-poor.

Thanks for the shout-out Galen :)

There are many in the same boat regarding the where to place votes conundrum, along with how much weight to apply to a comment (as usually they have only 1 vote) to give it value on payout day. Most accounts cannot give a non-dust vote (1 million + accounts) - sad times at present. I'm not sure what I would do in your situation, maybe try to up-vote the best 2/3 with a 3 cent vote (2.5 is I think above dust)? I try to reward all my commentators with 3 cents, but that's a 10% vote at present and can be a drain on my VP.

I've actually been thinking about doing a 'pies' post (people like pies apparently) that took the % of votes by weight towards posts and comments, as I was interested to see where and how much of my voting went towards Posts and Comments. I think you've made me decide this could be a worthwhile Post to put out next week sometime.

Cheers!

$0.03 is above dust? Damn it, means all my 0.2 votes never went to the user. That's disconcerting.

A 3 cent vote is over 30% of my vote so quite a lot. Hmm...

You're welcome for the shoutout too. Your post made me think about the fact I upvote myself. It feels wrong but my payouts are so low it just adds a little here and there. Maybe I'll stop doing it, or only do every second or third. Gives me a little more to spread around I guess. Your thoughts on that would be appreciated.

I think $0.03 is 'safely' above dust, and it's more like 0.025 - tough to see that figure on the display though!

It is a lot, and so maybe 3 per post (totaling a full vote) would suffice. Although, it depends on how much these votes drive engagement on your posts, and how much you enjoy that aspect too. Tricky stuff!

The way things are now, with less and less SP being freely distributed to 'normal' blogs (eg. not utopian, not dtube), I can certainly see why stakeholders choose to self vote. I think your brothers vote is sometimes the highest vote on his own posts, and well, if that's the case it seems overly selfless not to prove your stake with a self-vote.

For lower SP users, the 2/3 cents you can issue to self are a bit different in my mind. Yes they will add up over time, but I think a well placed vote, perhaps on a high-staked users comment along with a decent reply, could have more of a impact - If they were interested in the text, visited your work and stuck a $1 vote down, I would call that a much better result than the self-vote.

Steem is a complex and fun game isn't it? :D

I never thought of it this way. Worth some more thought for sure. Thanks!

When the price of steem was much higher some 12 months ago I used to upvote most comments on my posts. Now the steem price is so low I just up vote posts I like as at least they get a meaningful vote. And not a tiny vote on a comment that they probably will not get paid for as it is to low in value.

I feel the same...A more meaningful vote when on a post and it rewards the more effort that user put in on a post generally. Still, I feel compelled to reward those who are always making replies on my posts, like yourself. I generally don't upvote on a very short reply, but if some thought or effort has gone in, or it's super-funny then I like to throw something their way. I guess it all depends on the user, their previous, or ongoing, engagement etc. Hopefully the markets improve and there's a bit more to go around.

Yes I still will upvote the odd comment though not very often like I used to do.

Not everyone is a content creator so I like to upvote all my comments to give a chance to those who only curate. But then, I only post once or twice a week so it's not a huge drain on my VP.

Yes, I'd not thought about that; The curators I mean. They need some love too.

I'm not sure which is better from a rewards perspective, but I like to do a balance. I don't upvote all replies to my posts, but do try to show appreciation for those that make meaningful comments on them. I've got most of my power delegated out right now to do some testing on how that works. I still like to review and manually vote posts that I find valuable. Wasn't that the original design idea to help encourage quality posts, and not just random spam for profit?

I agree, I don't vote posts for the sake of it preferring to reward those I feel have added some value, or I have found interesting. I also delegate a little of my SP out, to frogcake and OCDB, as well so it reduces the value of my vote I guess.

Giving some encouragement to users here and there is a good thing. I've tried to help new users in the past but when their posts dwindle to nothing or they resort to memes, or images of bus stops and the tree at the front of their house...Well, I lose interest pretty quickly.

Thanks for your reply and perspective.

So it appears that you need to vote with a minimum of 100% Mana/RC at 1.2 SP in order to not be voting with dust. Whatever math that works out to be in the dollar calculation, I don't really know..

Calculations like that are far too complicated for me on a hot Sunday afternoon...😂

Yeah, it took a bit of googling to find that number. Lots of HF20 propaganda to sort through 😎

Not sure how I missed this post (@abh12345 shared it in a comment) but seems we have been thinking alike lately and I just posted about changes I am considering. I have come to the conclusion that my votes are more valuable to those creating engaging content like you as motivation and a means to improve retention of smaller users. I didn’t realize either that the dust threshold is almost $0.03 now so will need to adjust accordingly!

I know right? I thought dust was classified as below 0.02! I think I agree that my voting is better placed on posts not comments. I'll do that for a while and see how it goes. I'm also going to vote on myself 75% less (every fourth post). That'll give me a bit more to share around to others.

A payout has to get over 0.02 SBD to be paid I am pretty sure. That is the total payout, not the individual vote. Those with smaller votes might be better voting on posts rather than comments as a post is more likely to get additional votes on it.
