The Good, the Bad and the So-So

in #steemit5 years ago

After recent events with Steemit Inc. and after yesterday livestream, I'll make a list of the good, the bad and the so-so elements we have.

The Good

  • Steemit Inc. kept most of its blokchain developers
  • My vibe after yesterday's livestream is that Steemit will focus on the long run only on blockchain development
  • Immediate focus on RocksDB will make, once completed and rolled out, running a full node less expensive, which will help others run them and will help decentralize Steem further
  • Steem community showed one more time that it's fantastic

The Bad

  • SMTs are postponed without a clear date in sight
  • I don't really see a plan unfortunately. There is a big difference between a vision, clear or not, and an applicable plan.
  • Steemit Inc. still needs to cut costs, and are operating in a survival mode right now
  • Steemit Inc. didn't seem to have a contingency plan for the situation when markets go south below their forecasted support; which means it's still likely they don't have one now.
  • In what will probably continue to be a bear market, Steemit Inc. needs to find alternate sources of income, besides cutting costs.
  • Without Steemit.com and its free full nodes and APIs, much of the blogging and social media aspect of Steem would be crippled, according to Ned (see here). I'm not saying Steemit.com is a gonner right now, but we need a list of all condensers (desktop or mobile) which currently, or with minimum modifications, can operate on different nodes, even better if they are their own.

The So-So

  • There is talk about minimal implementations for tokens (certainly not "smart", and lacking many of the features promised for SMTs); in future iterations more of the "smart" functionalities would be added
  • Destiny is history ("on the back-burner")
  • No decision yet, but it's possible steemit.com will be phased out. Depending how it's done, it can be a good or a bad thing. There were some good suggestions from the community. This should also be done with concern to SEO rankings.
