There is no downvoting only flagging. Flagging is supposed to be reserved for things like spam and plagiarism. If people are downvoting people based on content then they are calling for censorship on what is supposed to be an uncensored platform.
Because the flags affect how everyone sees the posts, it becomes a game. If flags only affected your view, and modulated the view of others according to their view of you, then plagiarism and spam and copypasta would simply disappear from your view, and would therefore not gain the opportunity to be voted up. Thankyou for clarifying the issue a bit more for me.
