Why do you think the IRS considers it a Property? Would it not be a Foreign Currency? If let's say you'd change a cryptocurrency for a foreign fiat such as CAD. Would this be taxed differently?

    They have stated that they treat bitcoin and crypto like a property (stock). https://www.irs.gov/uac/newsroom/irs-virtual-currency-guidance
