Steemit Continues To Shape The Development Of Alternative News Media
The internet has spawned a plethora of alternative websites such as platforms for the promotion of social causes, anarchist movements and even popular culture fanzines. Blogs are proving to be a key feature of the modern alternative media landscape as well as the video based YouTube service, which is a digital platform allowing users to upload their own videos. However, YouTube is now often criticised for promoting leftist content over right wing content, and in so doing significantly risks its reputation if it is prepared to demonstrate such blatant impartiality. However, this is where a competitor platform like Steemit can help redress the balance. Steemit continues to demonstrate that it is a fully inclusive social media platform accommodating all sides of the political spectrum, and allowing for more candid evaluation of that content and debate.
In addition a new breed of alternative news has been established because of the emergence of alternative news websites. This has enabled these alternative news sites to disseminate news which has a different perspective on mainstream news matters. It has also engendered the term ‘participatory media’ because of its global appeal and the fact that it encourages direct contributions from ordinary people. However, are these alternative news providers a detriment to conventional news sources or do they make it possible for a wider analysis of news matters, and therefore increase our knowledge and understanding of the world?
If they are a detriment then this should surely be welcomed, given the obvious biases in the media and the damaging agenda a significant proportion of it is pursuing. Some commentators express concern about the challenges which alternative news media presents, while others embrace it with enthusiasm and see it as a much needed fresh perspective. In order to ascertain whether alternative news sources could be a threat to the mainstream news media it’s important to understand how news organisations set their agenda.
As with any news provider there is always constraints on time and resources and so procedures are established which help them select what is newsworthy and what is not, within this process alternative news media sources are almost automatically banished. From this perspective it can be argued, therefore, that alternative news media does not present a challenge or threat to conventional news providers. The news agenda can also be affected by what is called ‘inter-media agenda setting’ and there are a small number of elite organisations have the ability to influence the news agenda of other news providers. Alternative news outlets and platforms like Steemit have the ability to circumvent these mainstream channels of news production and in my opinion achieve a far more balanced and unbiased account of news.
I think this is a picture that explains the true meaning of the media now.

Current censorship and constant talk of fake news has created so much doubt in the alternate news outlets. Branding them fake or not an athourity thus throwing the stories out as BS. This has happened with many high profile stories recently, especially the ones regarding those in the elite.
