What is a Shitpost?

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

This is a topic that is discussed a lot on Steemit, and we all have different interests, thus, different opinions on what is considered as shitposting. I think most of us judge others for their posts, whether or not they are actually shitposts, and the more so if that post has more rewards than a dollar.

I admit it, I think I shitpost sometimes. For me that is when I take a fast selfie or any other fast snap with my phone and write what I've been doing that day. Some boring lifestyle crap, but sometimes I just want to share a simple thing and be done with it. This is after all a social media platform, and posting a selfie and saying hi to everyone in the mids of doing something fun in real life, is exactly what social media is for. Most of my posts take a lot of time; conjuring ideas, preparing to take pictures, taking them, post process and writing a post, then networking and all that, it's a 24/7 job. If I were to count how much I make per hours work, I'd be making minimum wage. I need to even that out sometimes with just a simple little thing.

If one has a good following and has been on the platform for a long time, the chances are that even when that person shitposts, they get good rewards. If you are a nobody, just starting out, no-one cares if you shitpost, probably not many people will even see it, that is a fact. But when you are somewhat established, you sort of have an obligation to the platform to not rape the reward pool with shitposts.

One very famous Steemian @Anomadsoul once posted a drunken selfie, with only a few sentences, and we all thought he had lost it and it was hilarious! He later wrote about it saying that he thinks that we are allowed to shitpost every once in a while when majority of the time we put out well thought out posts, and I completely agree with him.

Fellow photography enthusiasts @Escapist and @Rubencress have both said on several occasions that they shitposted something, and when I go look, I see no shitposts. Having 5-10 high quality pictures that all go together, with some little story or just a few words, is not a shitpost! You guys are idiots for thinking so. You went out, you took pictures, you took your time both in taking them and in post process. @Celestal on the other hand, has done a literal shitpost , with pictures of actual shit, though he writes a lot and so well that the post itself isn't shit, but actually really good. Some people just don't know how to shitpost!

If someone does only shitposts, like you would on instagram, snapchat or facebook, more than likely, I don't follow or upvote those people, there needs to be something more. Stories, ideas, opinions, passion and I'm a very visual person so I tend to upvote photography heavy posts.

I hardly ever upvote a post just for that post, I upvote the person and the blog as a whole. It's all about the consistency and effort as a whole that one has put into the platform, not about that one post, what ever it might be. I actually love it when someone who normally puts a lot of work into a post, makes a shitpost every once in a while, to show that they in fact are just regular people with regular thoughts and not always writing amazing articles or sharing a photographic story. I love seeing the real people behind the blogs, and shitposts are a good way to do that, there is not so much editing ones pictures, and words when you shitpost. It's just you sharing something on a whim.

What do you consider as being a shit post?

Ps. Funny thing, I texted the bff earlier to set a dinner date for later today, and I said to her that I have nothing going on in my head and I'm probably just gonna do some shitpost before we meet. Oh well, that worked out better than expected.

Most of the times I actually like shitposts. I agree with you, shitposts make people feel like real people with real lives. Sometimes I don't even have the time to read 1000-word posts and start thinking about the matter.

Yeah like who has time for that! It's good to have a variety of kinds, both easily digested and the ones that make you think a little more :)

What's interesting about shitposts is that as the ranks of manual curators with very large amounts of SP are thinning as more and more of them are joining the ranks of delegators to bidbots, quality will matter less and less all the time. If it weren't for the possibility of building apps that use the Steem blockchain and that provide their users with value in exchange for STEEM and SBD thus creating buying pressure on the currencies, I would not be very optimistic about the future of this platform. Steem is a very high-capacity battle-tested blockchain that would not choke like Ethereum if some app like CryptoKitties were to become all the rage.

Did you ever see my shitpost?

I made a meme for it and everything.

Sadly I has missed this, thank you for sharing it today! 😂

You're welcome!

I ran across the same post of @anomadsoul that you mention, and I share both your visions. Being still new on the platform, I do get discouraged of writing huge posts, because I know chances are big that they will go unnoticed. But even so, like you said, you can have a few good photos (that did required some work) and some text to go along... and that short post does take some work. And I don't think they're shitposts either. Lastly, I evaluate it on consistency either rather than a single post! If most posts are of blurry photos titled "my lunch"... then a shitposter it is. Great content blog, with the ocasional single photo... it suits my liking. Especially if the single photo is good :)

I feel for you about thinking that you are wasting your time if you use a lot of time for a post and it goes unnoticed. But I always say that if someone just posts shit memes (which I see you don't, so good), waiting to get more rewards and then start posting better stuff, they never will because the blog is full of shit that nobody will upvote. I'm all for quality, especially in photos, so those "my lunch" posts are really quite useless in my opinion, that is what instagram is for.

True! Producing bad content and waiting for followers is a road to nothing. That´s why I try to get a balance between time taken posting and quality... work in progress :)

Ah nice to see someone dropping some truth bombs instead of just bitching on about the state of steemit!

I personally think a shitpost is something you can generate in a second without much thought with no intention of contributing or engaging with the community

Things I see as shitposts are really poorly done cryptocurrency technical analysis posts with a snapshot of coinmarketcap like we all have access to the website bro no need to update us every day!

Then second is coping news stories verbatim like we all have access to bbc man give me your opinion on it

I myself shitpost all the time it, well I think they are shit posts but every so often I come up with a humdinger! It’s also tough since I blog on steemit my own blog and about 5 client blogs so I’m out of fresh ideas when I get to steemit lol

It's not like I have anything to really bitch about, Steemit changed my life for the better :)

You mentioned engaging, that is a really good point! Even a lesser post can be good if it raises good discussions in the comment section.

I completely agree about the screenshots from coinmarketcap and copy-paste from news sites, they are useless and we can easily get that information ourselves.

I just saw you got inspired to write about shitposts too! :)

Lol yes thanks you inspired me with your shitpost and so I shitposted about shitposts and then tagged your shitpost post in my shitpost post. Its like a shitpostception!

Lol! I was waiting a shitpost, but got actually shit and giggles post ;D

Thihih, you inspired me with your "shitposts" :D

Well there is some shitposts there... you know there is..

This is beautiful! A shit post about shit posts!! You too have failed. Your shitpost doesn't look like shit either. You need to work on that. Also, I probably watch too much Seinfeld reruns. I had a flashback to the episode of Kramer talking about " a coffee table book about coffee tables" when I wrote the 2nd sentence above.

Haha, I promise I will keep practising my shiposting skills!

Ps. I’ve never watched Seinfeld, it hurts my eyes so I can’t.

For me a shitpost is one that has been made with minimum effort. I do it occasionally where I have no time or energy in the day and I just need to get something out there...
but then you also have Ines that are a mockery.. where you can tell they've just plagiarised something from Reddit or google images with little to no effort even to disguise what they've done and then use bidbots to up their rewards.

I haven't posted anything on Steemit... yet.
(still waiting for anything that would pass my "send to a friend" filter.)
I didn't think of it as a "shit post filter" but I always consider - would I send it to a friend and what would their reaction be?
If I think I'd get a "WTF ??? Why would you send this to me??", I'd call that a shit post. I wouldn't post anything like that on Steemit.
A work of art or just a little thing, long or short, if you imagine a friend would fire back an "LOL" or "hey, that's kool",... post away!
Just my opinion... but seems to be, roughly, inline with other replies.

That is a funny way of putting it :D I send all sorts of weird things to my friends on WhatsApp so I can't use the same criteria that you do :P

You have only recently started commenting, right? Or at least you haven't communicated with me before, if I'm not mistaken. I'm really glad you are here now because it feels weird when I see the same names hanging on top 10 of my upvoters, yet don't know half of them!

Ya... it's a time thing.
I like your blog. You post a range of pics, thoughts and... umm... moods. (? ;) ) I like it.
I try to make sure I "up-vote" all posts from your blog in general. I know the resources that go into a good blog are not free - time, cameras, transportation, thought, research, computers, keeping you in food, coffee and alive to contribute more! :P

I've had a little more time lately. So I can be a little more social.
If I've been busy, it's nice to wind down and let my eyes scan something "not work related" for a bit. I like your posts, but don't always have time or energy to be social. But when I'm not as busy, I can actually pause with a coffee and be a little more interactive. 😃

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm sure most of the "silent voters" are similar.

You're AWESOME!
Don't assume from any silence that you haven't made some people out there think about something they may not have before or enjoyed some of your pics or comments and smiled.

I sure am moody :P Thank you so much for all the support, I hope I can keep you entertained for a long time to come :)

Do you mind me asking what kind of field do you work in? I promise I won't make you talk about it too much, just curious. Unless you are a doctor, then: "I have this weird looking .... could you take a look?" Kidding!

Sorta' between "fields" at the moment. Hence the free time.
Hey... wait... this blog is "EVE uncovered"... not "cornerstone uncovered"! 😉
