How do you Steem?
A few months ago Steemit was still quite rough around the edges. Very early adopters probably wrote code in a text editor, spell checked in word before copying and pasting to steemit.com. It was all a little clunky.
In recent months there has been a Steem explosion. Your experience is now much richer but it can be daunting with so many ways to interact. This post will be of interest to both new users of Steemit and veteran Steemians. I will share what works for me at the moment but, if you have another favourite way of doing things, I would love to hear what works for you.
I generally use one set of apps when I am on my desktop at home and another set when I am on my phone out and about (or the couch).
At Home
Writing
Its hard to write well thought out and formatted articles on your phone. I wait till I am at my desktop at home. The best tool I have found for writing is Steemwriter by @unipsycho
Browsing and Curating
When I am reading articles and voting I often find myself back at the main site https://steemit.com/ but a new site that has just been released which lets you view steemit thorough a different lens is https://busy.org/. Its still early days for this site but it looks good and provides a nice browsing experience.
@unipsycho also has created an app AutoSteem which allows you to browse posts visually. I have a feeling I will be using AutoSteem more and more.
Auto Curating
As the name would suggest AutoSteem by @unipsycho also lets you automatically vote. There are some settings you adjust and it will automatically vote for you on posts meeting criteria you have specified.
Commenting
https://steemit.com/ works best for me at the moment but https://busy.org/ is promising with a lovely interface. When they stop the comment submission on enter I will probably start using that for comments when I am at home.
Promoting Posts
To increase your upvotes you need to take matters into your own hands. Get you hard work out there for people to see. Post links on the following sites after you publish a new post:
- Steemit Chat Post a link in the relevant trail
- Discord Post a link in the relevant trail
- Twitter Tweet about your post using the hashtag #steemit
I used to also promote posts with SBD but I think I wont do that anymore. It helped for a while but the last few times I tried it, it didn't seem to have much impact and just cost me money.
Out and About
Writing
I mainly keep notes for researching later. When I get an idea I save a note to Google Drive or Evernote. I take clips from articles I read in newspapers or tweets I see in Evernote which I can later reference.
Browsing and Curating
Up until now I have been using the phone app Esteem by @good-karma. This app is great and I believe it has plans to synch across devices which would be nice, you could start writing on your phone and finish it on your desktop. It will however see competition from https://busy.org/ as that platform matures.
There are a few other interactions I have with Steemit at home, and when I am out and when I should be doing other things like working :)

Obsessing about my followers and votes
There are two great tools for this.
- Steemdb by @jesta. Just add your name like https://steemdb.com/@eroche to see lots of stats, graphs and useful info about your account.
- AutoSteem. This app is not just for autovoting. It also lets you analyse your followers, posts etc. There are many views on the left side which update with your details once you have logged the app into your account.

Thanks eroche for mentioning my products AutoSteem and SteemWriter. I can happily say I use them entirely for my writing and curating as well. I Still jump to steemit.com for comments (I'll probably add that to autosteem soon though as well) and I use steemit chat a fair bit with users as well.
Nice to hear how others steem and while I've used busy and esteem, they haven't been quite my style for interface or usability yet, although they provide quite a bit of good functionality.

It is actually interesting to see how others do. I must be the one of my kind, writing articles in a terminal with VI (for those who know this great editor (and in fact many more). I in contrast reading and curating either from the ipad (but the platform really sucks on that one, so onlywhen traveling), on the phone when waiting for trains or flights and on the computer most of the time :)

Part of the battle of writing is creating something that looks good on any platform. There are so many ways to view Steemit now that you need to test out what your readers are using. I'll check out VI.
I am using vi to write, not to read btw. There are terminal-based browsers like links, but I am only barely using them when I want to check things on distant machines. I am using mostly chrome to browse and read.
