Post Promotion (Sorta) Off the Chain
I apologize, the Fun Music Challenge #8 won't be written today. I wanted to write about something else instead. Do not worry, though, the challenge will be finished in the near future.
Many, if not most, Steemians use Discord in conjunction with their crypto social experience. This is mostly because Steemit is still in beta and the lack of many features have been endlessly discussed, but have not gone anywhere yet. Speaking of which, that sounds like another random @dmania post, featuring @ned, coming up.
That's right, the favorite spot outside of Steem Chat to promote your contents in the communities you chose to participate drop in. There's nothing wrong with wanting to promote your content without spending a cent. In fact, I also use these channels for the potential exposure.
Being part of @steemflagrewards and offering part of my time with the @steemcleaners, including some of the more covert operations, required branching out in terms of connections. It often resulted in reaching out to different communities or contact the correct person(s) for corrective actions I could not have performed otherwise. In many servers I have visited, I noted the existence of a "Post Promotion" channel.
The real question is: is it effective?
This is a matter of opinion. I have personally found it work best in communities where I am either active or a niche community with smaller numbers. Similar to real life, people check on you and what you are doing if you have built that connection. What a concept!
In larger communities, such as @minnowsupport (PAL), their promotional channel is often just a flood of links. I don't know who actually goes in there and check out several different posts, if at all. The community is saturated with traffic that it felt impossible to be seen. But, they do have top-notch support when it comes to weeding out abusers from their services.
Then, there are other communities, like @steembasicincome or @steemcommunity, that mandate (or strongly suggest) certain criteria before utilizing their promotional channels. Steem Chat already does this. Here are some examples I have seen along the way:
This is @sherlockholmes asking you...nicely
Team @buildawhale expects you to not go post happy
The @steembasicincome Project wishes you to slow down and check out what others are posting
Why does any of this matter? What is the point?
Recently, a little accident happened to @steemcommunity. Going through the comments, I felt impressed to point out how people did not seem to notice something was off. Here was the response I got from @ats-david:
I do not disagree that is a huge problem on the platform. Everyone is too busy chasing/buying that next big upvote, they are not making an attempt to have social interaction. In fact, it's rather antisocial. About three weeks ago, I wrote a piece about how the social aspect of the Steem Blockchain could eventually devolve into a mindless, although different from traditional proof of work, mining operation.
Well, I can't change the world, but I can try a different approach for my own modus operandi.
I'm going to try something different
I decided that I should try a self-imposed challenge; maybe for a few days, maybe even a week or two. I want to try to do something similar to what @steembasicincome expects of their promotional channel, starting with this post.
This means that I will check out at least one other content in the sea of links and choose one to upvote and comment. My vote isn't worth much, but I hope the authors will feel their work is being appreciated. Who knows? Maybe I will find high quality content creators like @stahlberg, who is over the top amazing. Or, I may find people who will, in turn, check out my content and offer some upvotes.
We shall see what happens. Perhaps this could be something similar to the Fun Music Challenge I decided to take on a while back thanks to @hanen. If I were to give this a tag, I'm thinking something along the lines of #PromotionHunt or #ContentHunter.
Anyways, I will keep you all updated.
I totally get what you mean, and I actually like how @steembasicincome handle their promotional channel, making people to engage with others (although I still see many ignore this). I get to read some fantastic post that I'm sure will not see in my regular feed.
keep us updated on your progress ya. Cheers!
Well, I can tell you that everyone I commented on replied back, so the social scene may not be as dead as we thought!
That's good to know!
I have to admit, I join Discord communities but never participate due to time constraints. There are so many, too. I find I become a bit overwhelmed by the over-arching missions and agendas of the communities which can be ambitious and big. It feels like a big commitment to start participating in a community, for me.
There's a sense of obligation that if they help me I owe something back, even if they don't say that, it's how I feel, and I don't have time to give well.
I feel I do not know all the background politics and that by supporting one community I am becoming the enemy of another.
Sometimes people can be creepy in the channels, or say inappropriate things. While I'm not a bambi my time is precious and I resent seeing such crap waste my time.
I don't know if this contributes anything at all to your post I am just freewheelin it here lol
PS thanks for the stahlberg recommendation I am following them now!
I can tell you right now that doing what I suggested in my post was tough and took an extra 20-30 minutes just to read and come up with something meaningful to say, and this is during a day where I have time off.
I get what you are saying about rival groups, but lucky for me, there's a very good chance any group opposed to @steemcleaners and/or @steemflagrewards probably have some ill intentions on the platform.
Do you think you will continue this method?
Oh for sure no one would be in good company as enemies of steemcleaners hah
My day 1 experience says no. It will probably not be a daily thing, given the number of servers I am in. I will keep at it and see.
One thing I did notice was that the same authors I have voted and commented on also promote in the multiple other servers, so their posts were easily skipped.
People not reading posts is the worst thing in my book.
Some of these answers look like they could have just as well created by a bot.
Just look at the #IntroduceYourself tag, plenty of generic greeting messages there. Even when the newbie posts something unique, it's met with a copy/paste message.
It's true...
The highlight in the post for me:
Going all double o seven on us!
Good to have you in the community, keep up the great work!
Oh, I aim to please.
Let's start with I found you on the IFC promo box. So some of them work. Not all some are just to overused., you would have a better chance of finding good stuff with a slow crawl through the new tab on steemit.
I think I prefer the tag #contenthunter. Kind of seems more open ended.
And nope most people do not read the post, or at least do not read it very well. A few weeks ago I tried to do a give away, simple rules, Less than 2 SBD in your account. No takers, So I concluded that I am the most broke on steemit, ended up giving the 1.5 SBD to a contest to be used as a prize.
I had seen other post with "Easter Eggs" so I thought I would try it. 7 days no takers.
Would be a good one to post in subtext.
I do think #contenthunter is better as well. Looks like the problem is universal. Most people just do not seem to read.
But that goes in real life as well. I remember this news: https://techtalk.pcpitstop.com/2012/06/12/it-pays-to-read-license-agreements-7-years-later/
I started to do a quick peruse (oxymoron?) on every document since then.
Congratulations! This post has been upvoted from the communal account, @minnowsupport, by Leonis from the Minnow Support Project.
