Last time we had an active account drop on that magnitude it was voting bots going down. Nothing happened with Steemvoter yesterday?
So far I know it worked normally....
Maybe this time the bots stayed and the real users all left...

The "rewards will be unusually low for the next couple of days" as stated by @steemitblog is only true for very large values of "couple". For more reasonable values of "couple", it's a lie.
As i mentioned earlier (in fact more than once), we have to completely revamp the 'incentive' structure of steem. The contents should be rewarded as long as it generate audience engagement. Otherwise, steem will slowly lose its stream !
At least we extend it now from 1 day to 7 days.....
