Suggestion: What do you think of a private messaging option on steemit?

I love this platform, I think it is moving in leaps and bounds, especially considering it is still only in beta.
It is described as where the blockchain meets social media, yet there is no private messaging option. Obviously you would have to approve people before letting them message you (or perhaps people who follow each other should only be allowed to message), but I think it would improve this awesome site immensely.
Do you think steemit needs private messaging? What are your thoughts guys?

Any messaging scheme that leverages the blockchain is by definition public; the only way to do so and maintain confidentiality would be to use a public-private encryption methodology.

I never thought of it like that in all honesty, but you are very right Mr. Peters. A new private cryptographic messaging system is not the easiest thing to just add to this platform. However, I do see it in future versions of steemit.

Yeah, I don't see why not. Private messages would be a good addition to steemit. You could just let anyone message anyone else.

Well all successful social medias have this option. Having said that, I strongly think some kind of approval would be needed between people before you can just message people - basically to ensure that one can avoid spam and abuse from people who may not share the same views.
