I Don’t Need To See What I Resteemed!

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

Spending such a large portion of my time on Steemit I often ponder over what would make the platform more efficient. It always goes back to people. It’s their content which determines the quality of the system. However, there is another important point and one that is far less political by nature.

Making life Easier for Content Creators

I think Steemit should implement an archiving system accessible only from a user’s profile and for that user. The most simple function I could see would be to be able to see your own blog without the resteems. Only you could do this so it would not take away the importance of choosing to resteem someone. When someone visits your blog, every resteem you ever made decreases your visibility because the user encounters them as they move back in time through your feed. This is why it is such an honor for a serious content creator to resteem you, they are giving you the same exposure as for their own content. Still, there should be a mode to make them disappear when you are scanning through your own feed in case your interested in seeing your history as a content creator.

I realize this Liz Tailor relates in no way shape or form. This is the work of one of my students and I figure it would make for a catchy header.

Another very powerful tool could be a search bar similar to Google Photos, the free cloud service.
Say you want to cover a topic you have written about a while back. You know that it was either in June or July last year. All you would need to do is to type: June July 2017 in your search bar and voila!
There might be some merit for this to only be available for your own profile when you are logged in. To curb the cost of the feature, it could be available to users with reputation higher than 51 for example.
I know of all the problems with bots boosting reputation without quality of content and about the flag wars but still, it would be cool if reputation had more complex ramifications as far as the mechanics of Steemit are concerned.
Maybe there could be 2 conditions that work to unlock the feature, either a high enough reputation or a high enough Steem Power.

Lastly it would be awesome for everyone to have a photo archive enabling you to consult every photo you have ever uploaded to the server. In addition, this gallery could allow you to post the same picture twice with the same link. I am sure the blockchain is cluttered enough without users posting the same photo over and over again. When it comes down to it, we have the power to reduce the carbon footprint and the cost of the social media by avoiding redundant uploads. This may go against the convenience people see in the internet where people treat our servers are an infinite resource. Some will say, if it matters so much to you, you can build your own archive of links. This is true but I only have 7 days to put the links in a text file because without the ability to edit, they are lost. Besides, the idea I have in mind, a modification to the interface, comes with a thumbnail preview of every photo you’ve ever posted.

What do you think? Is my concern a real one? Do you find yourself uploading the same pic multiple times on Steemit?
If so, do you think there is so much available cloud space that it really doesn’t matter? Perhaps I am bringing old school values to a digital economy where these concerns are not relevant. Regardless a photo gallery could serve a myriad other uses.

I believe that if we had our archives available Steemit would get a surge in requests to get old entries deleted and that this burial of feed method helps us forget about our less flattering selfies. Give them an inch and they will ask for a foot as they say. At the same time, there is no doubt that if Steem is to survive it absolutely must evolve by tackling issues intelligently. Are content creators going to be on the devs mind? Time will tell.

As content creators, we are in the driver seat and I believe that my solutions could help our experience reflect that a little bit more.

I really like all these ideas, of course you and I chatted about searching for the blogs you wrote previously. I do like your idea of implementing this for users of >50 reputation for cost.
