Fixing Steemit With Baby Steps (Part 2: Improved Filters)

Part 1: The Vault

Here are some ideas for the Steemit platform that actually might happen in the near future. It's pretty obvious that the Steemit interface is in desperate need of a makeover. Steem currency definitely has the ability to scale up, but the website certainly can not. I'm only following 36 people and already my feed is becoming difficult to navigate. Quite a few filters need to be added to the platform in order to facilitate the discovery of quality content.

The most obvious filters we #steemians need would effect what we see on our feed. As it stands now, our only filter options are unfollow and mute. Mute is even more drastic than unfollow, so these options are unacceptable.

We need the ability to pick which tags we want from which users. Maybe someone wants to read my cryptocurrency posts and not see videos of my cat (and vice versa). In addition, we need the ability to limit how many posts a day/week/month will appear on our feed from the same user. These two ideas could easily be combined. For example, this functionality would let you only see one post a day from me tagged with "steem". That way if I'm spamming "steem" post tags you don't have to see them all but you'll still see all my other posts.

Now that users can filter content, we need to let content creators affix a priority to each post. This way followers who are filtering content will be more likely to see important posts. If you only want to see one of my "cryptocurrency" posts a week I want to make sure it's the best one. A 0-100% SeekBar (Android) or a UISlider (IOS) would work just fine and be compatible with mobile technology.

Other Scrollbar Filters

Now that I've explained a much better way to filter user feeds I'd like to talk about search functionality. Clicking the "trending" and "hot" tabs I always see all the same people talking about all the same things; getting vastly overpaid. Again, we can use Scrollbars to filter out users that have high or low Steem Power and/or followers. A user with low followers and low Steem Power with a 'high' payout post like $10.00 would likely mean this was a very high quality post. Currently, posts like these are getting completely drowned out by a flood of mediocre whale posts.

A median payout average could be established for each user. A search variable could then be attributed to this value. This would be a great way to search for trending posts. A user with an average payout value of $10.00 per post could be filtered to only see their posts that made $20.00 and above. This same search would work for a user that makes an average of $500 per post; it would only show posts that made $1000 and above.

The more filter functionality Steemit implements the better off we #steemians will be.

Sort:

You're missing a large and probably very important post filter mechanism:

  • Filter the off all the Bots upvotes regardless of who is sending it (super important)

  • Filter off segments of upvoters: (also important to see who they are influencing)

Just silly examples: active-dust, inactive-dust (possible dummy & swarm bot accounts), active-minnows, inactive-minnows, dolphin, orca, whale, etc

  • Filter of promoted Post promotion from groups which skews the income but does not necessary attract new followers (from Steemit or outside) - eg. @curie, @blah-blah-group-syndicate-circle-jerk-club-my-aunt-uncle-50-best-friends....ok, so that last user might not be easy to filter out, but there are a ton of others you can filter out to make a greater impact.
