FLAGGING and DOWN VOTING: Some questions for the community here, and some ideas...

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

I notice the developers clearly put the FLAG for down voting in a very different place from UP VOTES.

Why?

I have my suspicions and I've posted them before.

I didn't know you COULD down vote a post for the first four or five days I used steemit.   I was okay with that.   Not voting has impact as well.

The first time I noticed it was a very graphic porn GIF that you even saw in the list of posts.   I learned about that flag after that.

I was happy there was no down vote.  (ignorance is bliss)

I see a lot of channels that in places like reddit that seem to get taken over by groups of people that DON'T even read the content they down vote.   If it says anything REMOTELY they disagree with or don't like they down vote.   This makes those channels hostile.   I personally avoid such places when I find them.

Could we change the down vote here to something like:

This way it would more clearly designate WHY something is down voted.

We all have different tastes.   What is good is subjective.

I had one person tell me they down vote because it was not a quality post.  (not mine, Tara's)   I looked at the post and it was very good quality (better than most), and well thought out.    It may not have been on a topic I was personally interested in, but it was well thought out.

If you don't like the topic, or disagree with the material then don't vote on it.

The fact that the down vote is shaped like a FLAG and is removed from the rest of the posting to me seems to imply it was intended as a FLAG or REPORT THIS POST type of action.   It is not a down arrow, it is not in the same area as the other voting.

DOWN VOTE BRIGADES DO NOT HELP ANYONE:   They hurt this community, even the people doing the down voting.   I explained this a little more in my post from this weekend.

My questions:

  • Can we change the down vote to actually be a report this post type mechanism?
  • Does the community think that is a good idea?  (I Realize it could just be my personal preference)

EDIT: You do not have to up vote my post to comment.  If you have an opinion and want to share it feel free to post.   I didn't post this to garner votes.   I posted it because it sincerely has me concerned.   I'm seeing posts that CONTENT wise are not bad have 20+ flagged votes (and growing).

Sort:

It is a good idea, because it happened to me that I have taken the vote, and why not

How about this?

This Flag is for the Following:

  • Troll - Online Harassment
  • Spam - Blatant miss-categorization of content
  • Fraud - A Deliberate trick or deception (includes plagiarism)

Down-voting (or flagging) is a concern of the community.

Computer programs (or automated Bots) submitting transactions to Steemit must meet or exceed community standards.

I also think something like someone posting a very graphic GIF as their first image so anyone looking at the post lists has to look at it and not flagging it as NSFW should be flagged. That stuff can get people in trouble at work. It should be an opt in thing.

The first day I was on here a little over two weeks ago someone had an animated GIF blow job scene that did exactly that. Good quality. It was in everyone's face without a choice to opt in though and with no warning.

I am not for censorship, but I am also not in favor of forcing people to view that which they don't want to see. So give them a warning, and a chance to know what they are getting into at least. :)

Should be covered under:

Blatant miss-categorization of content
