I think that the best thing for newcomers like me is to just comment and add value with those comments to those who are already established. I've earned more $ on some comments than I did with my post. I think that the system is encouraging that, because you will get the rep and followers sooner that way, and you will get noticed more quickly by those who are writing good content similar to your niche.
