Steem problems, the hardfork 3X vote, and the future.

I want to start of by saying that I'm new here. I understand what that implies. No followers, no rep, little steem power. Getting started and obtaining those things is a chore, and well it should be.

However once you get the followers, the rep, and the steem power. You can post things that are low quality. Even incorrect and full of wrong information and still get paid more than someone who has a good article that took a lot of time researching and composing it..

Example links.

here is a good post by leprechaun about a really bad flood that happened with videos and lots of information. and how he would buy shovels to help if his video did well.

Her is a post by bullionstackers. he posts good things. I follow him and will continue to follow him. Some of his animal pictures are great. but I came across a new one of his about how awesome Scottish Terriers are, with a completely different dog in the pictures.

I don't want to single bullion out. As I said he usually posts good articles. This type of thing happens often. And as I said bullion has been here in the trenches doing this for a lot longer than all us new people, he deserves a little slack yes.
But when people who are new here see those kinds of things happen. It can be discouraging.

There is talk that the hardfork will change things by giving people one 3X powered vote every 24 hours. And it should spread the earning around. I'm not so sure, but I hope so. I mean the whales vote will be worth 3 whales votes at that point or am I wrong? So sure a new person has one 3 cent vote once a day instead of all 1 cent votes. but wouldn't then the whale have a 600$ vote if he had a 200$ vote before? I tried to search for information on the hardfork. but it is buried and I cant search by most recent in steem search.

I like steemit and I hope that the changes and adaptations it makes are for the better. and that it eventually finds itself being one of the top social media sites on the internet. I will stay here and make posts that pay out 50 cents as long as I feel they are worth other people looking at, and to support the other people posting good stuff and not getting any replies or payout. Even to support the people who are posting good stuff, and are getting paid for it like they deserve! Once again, bullionstackers, sorry for pointing out your post, nothing at all against you. I will still follow and upvote your things and encourage the good posts you make! Your post was just the easiest one today to make an example of and in the comments you acknowledged it was the wrong dog. Which was the good thing to do..

There are two factors being adjusted in the next hard fork.

  • For leveling the playing field between whales and minnows, it is this - Right now, a whale's influence is disproportionately higher than a minnow's because the weight of their vote is squared by the influence algorithm. i.e. if you have 1 SP and I have 10, my vote is not 10 - but 100 - times more influential than yours. That's being adjusted to 1 share/1 vote. After the hard fork, someone with 10 times the steem power will have just 10 times the influence.

  • The second factor is the one that you refer to above. It has been referred to as a "super vote," and it is intended to level the playing field between people and bots. Under the current system, it's very hard for a person to manually vote enough to fully utilize their voting power. This gives bots disproportionate influence, since they don't need to work, eat, or sleep, even when they have the same amount of steem power. After the hard fork, one person with 5 or 10 votes should be able to compete with a bot that votes 40 or 100 times per day.

The first part about leveling the playing field sounds good. Why wasn't it that way to begin with? Whqt purpose did it serve?? That is like double taxation. Are you saying basically that someone with 1000 steem gets something like 2¢ vote but jumping to 10,000 steem would be closer to 2$ than 20¢? They get more money for their vote since they have more steem and that larger amount of steem gets multiplied for being larger also?
And the second part sounds good also. So is this addressing curating and trying to spread the money out more evenly? I don't fully understand the whole voting and voting power deal, I know that my vote becomes less after a certain amount of votes, but I don't know it's recovery rate. As I said I'm new here. I wasn't trying to say anything bad about the fork, ive told people that I thought it would help. like I said I will keep posting regardless. Thanks for clarifying all that you did yo!!

It's complicated. The logic behind the original method is on pages 16-17 of the whitepaper. The short version is that it was meant to curb abuse. And yes, both changes are intended to spread the rewards more evenly.

Are you saying basically that someone with 1000 steem gets something like 2¢ vote but jumping to 10,000 steem would be closer to 2$ than 20¢?

That's correct in terms of how much they add to a post's value, but not in terms of what they receive in curation rewards. What they receive is determined by the order in which they vote. Early voters receive a higher percentage (but voters before 30 minutes give a portion of their curation reward to the author as an early voting penalty - this is also done to level the playing field between bots and humans.)

As to voting power, I always forget the exact replenishment formula, but maximal voting is reportedly somewhere around 40 (x100%) votes per day right now. It'll be 10 times per day after the hard fork. You can always check your current voting power at https://steemdb.com/@drpuffnstuff or on your profile page at busy.org. FYI, the hard fork details are here. I recommend following @steemitblog to keep abreast of planned changes.

Man, thanks for getting back so quick and being on point with your comments. and throwing the steemdb link in so I don't even have to change it to my name haha :) !! following steemitblog now, and you too. Thanks for all that you do here!

However once you get the followers, the rep, and the steem power. You can post things that are low quality. Even incorrect and full of wrong information and still get paid more than someone who has a good article that took a lot of time researching and composing it..

No different from any free market, really. Do you think Justin Bieber is the finest musician alive today? Doesn't matter, he's the most popular. All you can do is engage with people, create a niche for yourself, be patient, keep at it. It's a brand new community here with very few people, it will only grow from here. You are lucky enough to be here at the early stages, don't throw away this opportunity. All the best!

And see @remlaps' comment below - you seem to have misunderstood the hardfork changes.

I followed you on this comment alone.
Much something I might say.
I love this platform, and the users, even if you are new. Just remember you must build it a bit before you can pull a Kittyhawk flight!
All things with patience.
No where in the ocean has a minnow a chance to cruise along side the big fish, here you are already whales! Albeit still in training a bit!

Just keep swimming! ;)

I concur. It happens everywhere. Other places much worse than this even. I said I would stick around. I've had good conversations on here. With yourself included! And I thought one direction was bigger than Justin now ;) !!! Neither my preference, but point taken!! Thanks for taking time to respond yo! You are one of the ones that makes quality posts and definitely deserves it!

Very good post

I'm also realy interested about all this coming with the new hardfork... But I can't even find a date when it will happen

Maybe I will try to find out the timeframe and take the new information from @remlaps response above and find out what else I can, so I can make a post about it. Unless remlaps want's to because he's surely more knowledgeable than I about it.. I've seen posts come and go about it. But its so hard to find them once they go too far

I understand the sentiment, thanks for staying and posting even if you only make 50 cents. dont give up, time has a big effect her I think. Or I hope. Resteeming and upvoted. Good luck steeming sir

Speaking of newbie; me and whales. My post are filled with really beautiful photos of paradise and hikes that I do and blog about. The events are real. Photos are real. But not one whale or even dolphins find it worthy. Hmm, I'm just rambling. Anyways, great article. I know how u feel. Have a wonderful day! Aloha!

I love your blog @islandliving Check out promoting them. I read a great post here a couple days ago here:
https://steemit.com/steemit/@condra/why-and-when-you-should-promote-your-posts

And this site is really kinda new yet, so comment, network, and build your base.
You are on your way already. I never had an experience I loved that I didn't have to grind at! ;)

Thank you for your support. I really appreciate that. And u r right, I'm very new. I will try promoting one day. Aloha!

A whale is going to follow you one day and resteem all of your posts to all of their dolphins! You have talent!
I appreciate someone blogging hikes the great way you do on this island that I love!
Aloha friend! :)

Thank u. Yes, I really enjoy sharing it. Mahalo!

WORD. I haven't been around long enough to know for certain how it will come out over time, but my suspicion already is that it's social interaction, not quality of post, that makes one's marine mammal grow larger. Still, THIS is a quality post, and you have my vote, and my follow. Godspeed.

Thanks for sharing those thoughts! I agree that it's weird that people are getting bunch of steem for really low quality posts... Before I made my account here my friend mention that you need to present something interesting and valuable to be able to stay on platform... but I think you can make yourself a ground rules... Follow those who you think present something interesting ... this is what I do. I'm maybe still new here but I don't want to follow people for a favor to fallow me back..

Just keep at it. No one else pays you for posting right? So who cares. Just meet people and post about what you want others to hear about. and in 1 year you will be making more on average for a post than you are now. I will guarantee it! following you now, best of luck!

In your opinion, do you get more followers by consistently putting out content or by networking in the comment posts? Or is it just all together?

Sorry i didn't get back to you for days yo... I would say just all together.. comment on the things that interest you, post the things that interest you. and if people follow you will at least have mutual interest. follow for follow often times don't share any mutual interests
