Can Steemit take on Facebook?

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

A lot of Steemians are sure that Steemit will be more popular than Facebook. I am not. Steemit has huge potential, but also some things that hold it back.

Here's 2 reasons why I'm not convinced:

Facebook is "all consuming"

  • By this I mean that FB has successfully managed to become a huge part of almost every aspect of peoples lives. Not only can you read about your friends, but you "have to" have a FB-account if you are want to be included. Are you a part of a choir, a sports team, work as a voluntary or whatever? Well, then there's probably a facebook group there, where you get information about the next meet up etc. Do you have kids at school or in kidergarten? Then there's probably a parents discussion group for that as well. Events are also posted on Facebook, for you to click if you are attending or not.

If Steemit is supposed to be a serious contender to this, it would have to make some similar solutions for this, or else it will forever stay in the shadow og the mighty FB. Adding 5 tags to a post will not get it there.

People still don't understand it

  • Hell, I still don't fully understand it. How do you get paid to post something? Where does the money come from? For the "average joe" who is not into all the technological jumbo mumbo, then blockchain and is too abstract to understand. Most people are sceptical to things they don't understand. It's not until you see a LOT of money that folks will jump on the train even though they don't understand it. Just look at Bitcoin.

What do you think? Am I all wrong here? And do we really wan't Steemit to become a new FB?

Good post @driftnerd. Have you tried using steemit chats or going to steemit tools and seeing what they have? I am new and trying to learn. Just a possible solution that popped in my head in place of the FB chat. For me steemit will be replacing youtube more that FB.

thanks for the reply @hopfarmnc! And no I haven't. Where do I find it? How can Steemit replace YouTube for you though? How do you search for videos?
My 2 eldest kids are in school. On FB there is created hidden pages where parents can post information about the class. Steemit has no such possibilities, as far as I know.

At the top right of your page there is 3 lines just to the right of your profile pic click it. Towards the bottom there is a tab that is called steemit chat right under that is steemit app center where there is all kinds of steemit tools. I search for videos with the search bar at the top of the page. it is to the right of the magnifying glass. Once you have typed in what you want to look for and hit enter it will bring up a page that looks like a googel search. scroll down just a little and you will see the steemit post on that subject. also the more people you follow the more that will show up in your feed(like utube). I use dtube also. If you want to post videos on steemit i found it makes it a lot easier. Like i said im new but the more i mess with it the more i find out.

Thanks @hopfatmnc! That's great info. Guess I haven't explored enough :)

How can Steemit replace YouTube for you though? How do you search for videos?

Someone built a video streaming service named DTube that runs on the Steemit blockchain (if I've understood it correctly).

Thanks @kapteinb! I've heard about DTube, just didn't know that it was the same as Steemit, more likea separate unit.

Nice article.
As long as people not understand "how the money is coming" it will be a challenge to increase the amount of registered (adult) users.
But there a lot of FB users who can not write a Word document, so my opinion is that Steemit has a long way to improve the privacy if ever to compare with Instagram / FB. You can read every article here and see all the wallets without any login at all.

Good point @jetben2016!
It's like a double edged sword isn't it? In one way it's great that it is transparent so anyone can pick up possible monkey business :) - But there is no real sence of privacy for those who want a platform for them and their closest friends.

What do you think? Am I all wrong here?

I think you're right. Steemit and Facebook aren't even targeting the same niche, so even if Steemit becomes super popular it likely won't be at the expense of Facebook. The services more likely to suffer are blogging services like Tumblr and Medium.

Thanks for the reply @kapteinb. You have a very good point! As @jetben2016 states:

here a lot of FB users who can not write a Word document

So FB could be the low-level entry platform that's easy to use by everyone, while Steemit will be more for those who actually post more advanced stuff.

Although if a group of friends join, and they post and upvote each other, then they could post all kinds of stupid shit just to generate money for themselves. I don't know. Let's see how it turns out :)
