We're Living In A Simulation - But Can We "Jailbreak" It? George Hotz Thinks We Might
Here's your Saturday dose of entertainment (even George says at some point in this presentation it's kind of like art) mixed with provocative (even offensive) ideas. The presentation, kept two weeks ago at SXSW, has 30 minutes full of speculations about humans being run as NPCs (non playing characters) in a bigger simulation, and 30 minutes of Q & A, which, building upon the ideas in the first half an hour, is even more interesting.
Here are a few takeaways:
- being an atheist just because you were raised like this is just as "wrong" as being a religious person just because you were raised as a religious person
- physics might be different in different universes, but, allegedly, there's only one math
- if physics might be different, then there might be an universe in which entropy doesn't increase, hence, there might be a universe in which you can live forever (debatable, IMHO, but interesting as an idea)
- as long as you're just talking about the simulation, the simulators won't be very worried, but if you really get close to breaking the simulation, well, things may turn ugly
- quantum computers might be able to solve untractable problems (or break cryptography which is based on equations solvable in polynomial times) and so they may get us closer to finding an answer and an exit from the simulation - but the energy consumption of those will be far bigger than the usual computer - it would be just like you'd see your AWS bill increasing too much, and you'll know, as a master simulator, that something is going on there.
The only thing that I'm not agreeing with is that, just at the end, George puts meditation - as a "simulation hacking" technique - on the same level with psychedelics, which are obviously not a very good hacking technique. I agree psychedelics are not good, because, if anything, they are enhancing the simulation, whereas meditation, by slowing down the influx of data, gives more and more space and clarity to see the simulation for what really is, and even gets a way out of it.
But hey, George is still young, he still have time to get into this stuff even deeper.

Elon Musk also thinks we're all probably trapped in a "Matrix" like pseudo existence. Great minds think alike.
I think of this "simulation" more like playing the game, Roy, on Rick and Morty where they went to an alien arcade and played a game where they simulated a human life experience for fun in 30minutes.
Have fun don't waste the game.
Becoming conscious of ourselves in the sim is like waking up in a lucid dream. You realize your parameters and limitations are further away that you thought. You have more scope to act, while still in the sim. And with the newly discovered freedom you can begin to escape.
But (maybe) the most important question is: "does it matter?"
When my daughter played "the Sims" I really doubt if the characters in the game cared about wether or not they "lived" in a simulation….
besides: what happened to them when we switched of the computer?

Hey my pal... yes you are right... he is still young and he needs more to understand simulation in better view.
I can understand why you are not agreeing with him as we are having the mutual respect to the others option.
